You could tell by the look on Judge Vincent Gaughan's face as court began this morning that something bad had already happened.

According to a brief hearing in the courtroom, as R. Kelly jurors arrived at the 5th floor of the Criminal Courts Building this morning, a woman yelled at them: "Free R. Kelly!"

Yelling something like that at a jury would be serious business in any case, but in this one, where Gaughan has instituted a strict decorum order, it's even more unfortunate.

The judge, not one to trifle with anything that could compromise the R&B singer's right to a fair trial, ordered the woman held on $50,000 bail until late next month when she will have a hearing to determine whether she should be held in contempt of court, or other charges, and punished.

(Several months ago, the judge held a different woman in contempt for taking a picture on her cell phone in the courtroom, landing her in jail for the weekend.)

During today's hearing, Sgt. London Thomas, who is in charge of coordinating security personnel at the Criminal Courts Building, testified that as he exited the 5th-floor freight elevator with the jury at about 10:20 a.m. he observed 15 to 20 people standing around.

Two times, he said, he told the crowd to move. As the group began to respond, he saw the woman and heard her yell, "Free R. Kelly." He advanced on her, and in a quieter voice, he testified, she said it again. "I was looking directly at her when she yelled it," he told Gaughan.

Another friend of alleged victim takes stand

Woman, 23, says she recognized Kelly and former classmate on tape

The prosecution in the R. Kelly child pornography trial continued Thursday to lay the groundwork for a positive identification of the alleged victim.

Without a victim who actually admits to being a victim, the state is out to prove that a string of identifications from friends and family members is the next best thing.

Aubrey Hampton, 23, a former friend and classmate of the alleged victim, testified that she saw the sex tape at a friend's house after hearing about it through the grapevine at Oak Park-River Forest High School.

She said at the time, her junior year, she recognized the girl as her friend.

Hampton said that her mother later found the tape in her daughter's bedroom and tossed it out. But when Hampton saw the video again this morning in the state's attorney's office, she said she was once again convinced it was her friend.

"Her face, some of her mannerisms and some parts her voice," Hampton said when asked why she was so convinced. "The way she licked her bottom lip."

Hampton told the court she also recognized Kelly, whom she'd met a few times through her friend.

On cross-examination, Hampton told the court that her friend never told her that she was having sex with Kelly, nor did she suspect that any sexual activity was taking place between them.

Hampton's mother, Mary Kay Jerit, an adoption worker with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, was asked on cross-examination why she didn't turn the tape over to authorities instead of throwing it away if she suspected it to be child porn. Jerit said that she inquired if the tape was under investigation but did not report it because she was not mandated to do so.

As was the pattern yesterday, the defense line of questioning sought to suggest that the witnesses' identifications had been influenced by gossip, which made them predisposed to assume that the alleged victim and Kelly were featured in the video.

More identification witnesses are expected to be called this afternoon.

It's 4 years old, and Williams took a lot of heat at the time from the listening audience for giving an interview to a jealous, player-hater brother. Now here we are 4 years later with actual witnesses in the trial to what happened back then.
