Marcus Miller - Catalina Jazz Club - (5-1-2008)

The performance was hosted by the local...aaaargh..."Snooze jazz" station's morning hosts...

...Pat Prescott & Brian McKnight.

...The View

...The Gear

Prior to the first set, my friend and I got to hang out in the dressing room with Marcus and had an interesting discussion about music, equipment and his involvement in the making of Wayne Shorter's High Life album (thanks to paligap for suggesting that subject).

The same superb players and almost the same set as PFunkjazz described here:
http://prince.org/msg/8/269377
They didn't include People Make The World Go Round Thursday night.

Poogie Bell - drums
Bobby Sparks - keys
Michael "Patches" Stewart - trumpet
Gregoire Maret - harmonica
Keith Anderson - sax
Jean Baylor - vocals

When Marcus did his bass clarinet walkaround...

...he ended up standing just to my left.

Outside of the great playing, the thing that struck me most was how he was able to recreate his unique bass sould live.

Bobby Sparks stuck to classic keys (mini-moog, B-3, Fender Rhodes, clavinet) with the exception of one Korg Triton.

The animated playing style of harmonica player Gregoire Maret...

...got one of the biggest crowd reactions.

...Best shot of the night

I'll leave you with a segment of the encore...

...What Is Hip?

Don't miss them if they come to your town.

biggrin It wasn't that bad.
The use of the Triton was limited to lead guitar type sounds on one tune.

Wow, this would have been a great way to spend my birthday but as usual, living vicariously through t/A. (I did end up in South Beach for the weekend so it wasn't all that bad) lol

Thanks for the post and that live clip, I will get into that club next time I'm there...

I was there on 5/2, and Stanley Clarke was IN DA HOUSE!! Marcus was showing off big time, but it was worth it. I've seen Marcus a million times, but i can tell he was pressured with Stanley looking right at him!!! biggrin
It was a very cool night!!!
