thumbs up! These are the two albums that come to mind when I think of sample use that isn't blatant. There are so many layers to the sound, especially on the Public Enemy album. You recognize the sample enough to think you know where it came from, but it works on it's own.

Yep. And it was the first time an act got Madonna's permission to sample her music.

Not that she hadn't been sampled before lurking

Can't argue that. It's the ONLY way it should be done in my book.

Well, post more examples! I only took the most mentioned ones where it is usually a huge collage.

U should KNOW better than that. I love the way Teddy did "No Diggity".

Even his new jack swing stuff was very innovative in the way he created original songs from subtle samples.

I find this album pretty difficult to listen to except for its mesmerizing production:

I don't know the album well enough, but I'm not too cool to admit that "Groove Is In The Heart" is an unstoppable combination of samples.

An example of a chunky sample molded into a new song of worth is "Rhythm Nation".

I remember when they were on Club MTV promoting this album and Julie Brown asked them their opinion of sampling (it was a hot topic at the time) and Lady Kier said, "If you use their music, den you should pay dem." lol

I doubt Deee-lite's record company actually paid everyone sampled on "Groove Is In The Heart". In 1990, samples that were only percussive breaks and not melodic weren't usually cleared.
