I've heard three full tracks. A Spell A Rebel Yell is very cool.
Anyway, what I like, thus far, is the music is not instantly accessable.
Very dense and requires multiple listenings. That's usually my favourite kind of music.
Parachutes is my fave from Coldplay. So your comment is very encouraging.

...I'm not the author ...but resume perfectly the feelings about the new Album!

From a Coldplay Forum

"Hello fellow Coldplay fans of the world. I have been listening to this band as a fan since 2004 and was there when AROBTTH was picking up steam, so I feel I have a good handle on the context in which this album was released.

I'll be blunt; I hated X&Y. Hated it. It felt drab, watered-down, and overcooked; a completely failed record in every respect. It had no percussive backbone, the lyrics were lacking, and the album just floated along in an uninteresting manner until it eventually came to an end.

This was especially disappointing because, like everyone here, I thought the first two records were absolutely fantastic; subtle, bewitching melodies were crossed with a certain epic bombast that made the records more than just "pretty". Parachutes will likely always be my favorite; there isn't a weak track in the bunch, and it felt personal. Very personal. AROBTTH was like Parachutes, but on a larger scale. I didn't dig it quite as much, as it didn't cohere in the same way and it just felt to me like a bunch of (often great) songs on a piece of plastic. That and I've heard Clocks too damn much. But I still think it's great.

With that in mind, I listened to the recently leaked VLVODAAHF (it's going to be quite wearing typing that out time and time again...) today, and kept hope in spite of the fact that X&Y was one of the more disappointing outings from any band I've come across this decade. As you can see by the thread title, it was a successful listening experience.

On a base "are the songs good" level, the album certainly succeeds. Like Parachutes, I really can't name a weak song, though if pushed I would have to say Violet Hill, an unfortunate choice for first single that has some rather daft lyrics and lacks a strong hook. Also, Cemeteries of London hasn't grown on me yet. But it likely will. However, everything else is off-the-charts, and thrills me deeply. Life In Technicolor reminds me of Bowie's Speed Of Life, but less abrasive and equally intoxicating. Lost! just owns, and contains some of my favorite Will Champion percussion of all time, something that was sorely missing from X&Y. Yes is the best of all; it rivals Shiver and God Put A Smile On Your Face as my favorite Coldplay song. Its gorgeous and choppy string arrangements are contrasted by an epic, guitar-heavy coda that is just awesome on so many levels. I had no idea they had it in them.

Also, like Parachutes, this album coheres very well. Yes--->Viva La Vida is a particularly great segue, but the whole album is a very strong listening experience.

For everyone who hasn't heard this album yet: be excited. This record has strengthened by fandom greatly. What a knockout of an album"

It has been leaked...

I've heard it one and a half times and it's growing on me. The opening intstrumental is spine-tingling and there're enough interesting things going on with various catchy bits to keep me going back to it at this stage.

On the evidence so far i'd say it's more adventurous than X & Y.

I look forward to hearing it, but I hope the rest of the album is better than Violet Hill. I didn't like that song at all.

Im staying away from this record till next weekend when it comes out here in NYC (early street date) but im not sure im gonna get into it since im spending most of the time listening to the Magne F cd "dot of black in the blue of your bliss" and we all know he is the "mastermind" of that chord progression sound, that so many have used, Guy Berryman also plays on the record.

I'm glad the guy who reviewed it further up the page also didn't like X & Y. I thought that album was repetitious, bland, and formulaic.

I'm really excited to listen to this thing.

I like listening to these sub-par versions sometimes because then when I buy the real thing, wink, it's kinda like listening to it brand new. Plus it will have had some time to sink in. And I enjoy liner notes, artwork, etc.
BTW, any special editions planned?

Radiohead are too serious for my taste, the other two bands I don't know. My favorite band of all time are The Beatles.

Parachutes is not my favorite. It has some great tracks (Yellow, Trouble) but overall the album is o alternative for my taste.

Rush is brilliant. A masterpiece.

X&Y is still great. But I was afraif which way they would go next time. Because X&Y was like Rush Part II but only more electro sounding (remeber that Kraftwerk sample). But I think Low, Speed Of Sounds, Fix You and almost any other songs are excecellent!!

Now this album I still have to give a proper listen. I like Viva La Vida (the song) and Lost! so far the most.

What I admire is that they really changed their sound. The typical Coldplay melody is there from time to time still, but Lost! with it's Timbaland inspired beats (the drummer wanted to do a Cry Me A River he said) and stuff, and the album cover differ so much from the first three records. I like it.

A Spell A Rebel Yell (whatever this means) is okay. Let's hope they'll put out many new b-sides.

I'm not all the way through it yet, but wow, this is already far more inspired and adventurous than X&Y.

The songs change directions a lot more than on traditional Coldplay albums. The band's showing a lot more confidence and risk taking on this album, and it really pays off. It all feels very vibrant. A song like 42 sounds like something the band never would've dared a few years ago.

I didn't expect much from a song with a title like Strawberry Swing, but what a gorgeous track. Very uplifting.

The last song is definitely a good closer.

Nothing on this album is as heart stopping for me as The Scientist or the last two minutes of Politik, but it's their most consistently enjoyable album so far.

What I really like is that the whole album has a positive overall sound, and I think that plays to the band's strength. Rather than trying to imitate Radiohead's sound and repeat themes of alienation and isolation (but in a more shallow way) like they sometimes had before, here they're utilizing their gift for writing accessible, uplifting tunes.

My ranking of Coldplay's albums:

1. A Rush of Blood to the Head -- 4.5/5
2. Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends -- 4.5/5
3. Parachutes -- 3.5/5
4. X&Y -- 3/5

Many people seem to dislike X&Y, I think it's their second best album (behind Rush).
IÄm still not sure about Viva... I don't think it will be my fave. Lost! is there new anthem. I can totally imagine people waving candles and singing along to it in concerts.

but i'm confused about the marketing. 2 singles within a month both for free. Now the album gets streamed... it's fine to see they don't worry about sales, but I think they should promote their songs right so that non-fans have a chance to her those songs as well.

I originally had A Rush Of Blood as my favorite album by CPlay, but i just can't give it that much credit altho there are to songs filled with genius on it (Politik and Amsterdam)

My ranking

Parachutes
Viva La Vida
A Rush Of Blood
X&Y

Lost! is the single greatest Coldplay song ever, and it needs to be the next single. It almost sounds like Coldplay's answer to Reckoner.

I've only listened a few times, but I already think this is my favorite Coldplay album. X&Y is too long, Parachutes is a little too depressing, and A Rush of Blood to the Head isn't as consistently good. I concur that "Lost!" should be the next single, but I have a hard time deciding which version I like better.

Haven't decided on a favorite song yet .. but will agree that Violet Hill is not the favorite, listened to the album a few times, very encouraging, will definitely buy the real deal when it comes out. I like it overall, and better than the last.
