I don't know. From the songs I heard I don't think they're gonna be as strong as the first 3 albums. But then again, this isn't the New Wave era. Maybe I'll learn to like them eventually. shrug

I was thinking about this yesterday - and your comments on the other thread, in fact. nod

Maybe so... I dunno. In some ways, I'd love them to go back to that lo-fi garage/new wave sound but if they'd stuck with that throughout their entire career, people would be saying they're repeating themselves. shrug I am just so overjoyed to be able to lay my hands on a new album from them later... they make me so happy. mushy I'll take whatever it is. lol That sounds really fammy but they're The B-52's... all the wannabes (Scissor Sisters, etc) can go back in their box. wink

I hate the way they're considered just a silly, fluffy, novelty band by a lot of people. Well, okay, they are in some ways lol, but they are killer songwriters. Bloody amazing. But I like having them as one of my 'best/worst kept secrets'. Maybe they should stay that way.

I am sooooo excited about this album. redface mr.green I'm going to be a teenager all over again later, I know it. cloud9

I find their music very gimmicky. One or two songs is fun, but a whole album is just too much for me. The way the Fred guy yelps really gets on my nerves.

lol

I can understand why you'd say that but, trust me, they are fantastic songwriters. Very idiosyncratic, too. There's no-one quite like them. But, granted, you probably have to be in the mood for them; and they're not quite to everyone's taste. But they have written some killer tracks - upbeat party anthems and beautiful singalong songs which, honestly, are so moving. Not all their tracks include Fred Schneider honking along. giggle

I think I may stop reading reviews (even though I know - as I type that - I won't neutral). Most of them have been mixed, some good, some terrible; mostly saying they should 'act their age' or Fred is annoying. falloff I did start wondering "What if they're right" hmmm but then I realised: it's the same with Prince/Madonna/whoever - I don't expect them to reinvent the wheel *every* single time they release an album. shrug And it wouldn't be The B-52s if they didn't release the stuff they do - if I want something miserable and depressing, I'll dig out a different artist. The B-52s are all about being out-there, creating their own musical universe and having fun/moving you at the same time. They really are unique. And their music was EXACTLY what I needed during my teenage years. nod They were like *my* band - no-one else's. But, again, I can see why they don't appeal to everyone. I'm just absolutely ecstatic that they have a new album out! (Which wasn't today, unfortunately hrmph).

I've seen those mixes but only on itunes - and I've never downloaded anything from there before. (I'm such a technophobe confused - the Org is about as technical as I get boxed lol). Do you know if there are any plans to release it as a physical single?

You know... I still haven't upgraded my albums to cd; I listen to the tapes. giggle I really want to get them but - knowing my luck - they'll all be remastered/re-released within 6 months. But I have held out for so long, it's killing me. I may get them this week!

I probably will as well. Kind of dissapointed in myself for not listening to Sirius more since I'm sure the B52s and Fred have been all over there promotin, especially on his Friday night show.

Even though I love the B's, and have been into them forever (Cosmic Thing was the first CD I ever owned), I have zero interest in this album. I even previewed a few songs, and still no spark. I think they took too long of a break, and now they're not relevant to me anymore. I'll always love their old stuff, but I doubt I'll buy the newer material.

That is exactly how I feel about the Sugarcubes.

I will pick up the new B-52s album at some point in the next few weeks. The song "Funplex" isn't bad. I can hear how it's a little grittier--even in the girls' vocals. I have everything else they've ever done.

woot!

Okay...I've only listened to it once...so I can't really give a full review, as yet. But so far, I'm loving it. Classic Kate, Fred and Cindy. (They sound as great as ever.)

But what really impressed me at first had nothing to do with the music.

I pre-ordered the album on vinyl because...well...I like vinyl. Only thing is...I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to hear the entire album for awhile because I'm super busy right now and don't have time to listen or rip the vinyl.

But I decided on vinyl, anyway. (It's a limited release - you gotta get those while you can.) I figure I can always buy a digital from iTunes if I'm that eager to have it in the iPod.

So I get the album home and...as I'm sliding the platter out...out slides a CD in addition to the vinyl. And not just a CD...but a CD with tracks in both regular and mp3 formats. eek

Bloody friggin' brilliant, that.

(Are you listening Prince? You give away free CDs all the time, anyway. Why not tuck a few of them into some well-mastered 180-gram vinyl records next time? Hmmmm?)

More on the music tomorrow. I plan on listening to the entire album - uninterrupted - on my way to work.

Also, the vinyl/CD/MP3 set is priced the same as the regular CD. You're essentially getting a free 180 gram vinyl pressing.

My copy arrived in today's mail. Haven't listened to it yet, though, since I want to hear the vinyl version first, and I'm out of record cleaning fluid. (Yes folks, even new records should be cleaned before they're played.)
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.
