"CRAYONS" - DONNA SUMMER'S NEW ALBUM - info inside and the album cover! Stamp Your Feet - Donna Summer's New Single Donna's voice has a deeper quality on this recording. Though it could be how her vocals were treated in the mix, I think it's just a natural progression of her voice. Donna's unmistakable presence is still there. Such power! Lyrically, this is an empowerment song; one of those "I've been down before, but I got up again. Be Strong!". The Production is very clean. Thumping beats are met with rich synth pads. Musically, the bass reinforces the chord changes without any addition moment, giving that deep open sound similar to some New Age compositions. The song starts with a pep-rally chant (think of Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" if you must) where Donna spells out "S-T-A-M-P". A few bars later, the grand pads come in to smooth it out. Verse glides along with electronic accents swirling around in the background. The melody feels a little more free-formed than a structured pop song. Not something that you can easily sing along to, unless you're one of those devoted Donna fans who lip-synchs to her songs in the mirror! Chorus brings it together with a declaration to "Stamp Your Feet On The Ground. Make It Really Loud" (obviously, this song is not intended for anyone who lives in an apartment building). Then the next line... is she's saying "Make a big ass sound"?!?! You tell me! Vocals in the chorus have that filtered effect which seems to be popular right now (Janet, Paula Abdul...). Overall, I feel like this single was made to appeal to a more contemporary audience rather than to give us another Donna "classic". I do like the song, but I wish the verses were a little more melodic. I'm wondering if radio will give her a chance with this one. [Edited 2/20/08 19:51pm] The best site for Donna news even more so than when her own is opened is donna-tribute.com and the webmaster (webmistress, Cathy) is posting fast and furious any info she finds. I think there are two different releases dates. One is June 1, the other May something. We'll have to wait and see.

"Crayons"? yeah,it's an odd title for an album, but here's some insight on why Donna chose that title... For those of you wondering about the title 'Crayons',well...Donna mentioned it at the Florida concert. She said it's like when you are a kid and you open a box of crayons with all the various colors and flavors to play with. The new CD is like that...it will have lots of different flavors of music.

Mariah would be so proud It's similiar to what Madonna is doing with her new album. The song "Candy Store" has the same theme.....see which flavors you like and I'll have it for you....These ladies are trying to present their albums as a bunch of different colors and flavors Some would say that they need to grow up,lol.

So many female singers have ruined their voices over the years, Gwen Stefani (sounds crap now), Siouxsie Sioux (sounds like a man on her solo album), Mariah (new cracks since Charmbracelet), Britney (inconsistent, no longer able to sing with authority). Can't think of other examples, but it's very common.

Nice soulful vocals on this song. Thats all the track is good for. Because the music sounds cheap.

I like the bridge, I'm not crazy about the rest of the song though I love her older stuff. I think Crayons is a nice enough to name to spark my interest in the checking out the rest of the album though.
