i'm crazy about "luv" - Janet's best single since "all nite". "rock wid u" will not go anywhere, she needs to abandon it, although it's a decent album track

Roger Friedman reviews Discipline.

Janet: What She's Done for us Lately

You know Janet Jackson can not get a break. She’s always stayed away from her family, but they keep pulling her back in. In January 2004, right after Michael was arrested for child molestation and conspiracy, Janet played the Super Bowl with Justin Timberlake to promote her upcoming “Damita Jo” album.

That’s when the “wardrobe malfunction” happened. Timberlake danced away and Janet was left holding the bag. “Damita Jo” and a subsequent album tanked. She gained and lost 60 pounds. It was a bad time.

Now comes “Discipline” with a couple of really hot singles, set for February 26th. On “Discipline,” all the ambiguous stuff is gone. Janet is back to hooks, catchy rhythms and defined singing. Besides the single, “Feedback,” I heard four tracks yesterday that were more like the Janet of “Control” and “Rhythm Nation.”

The up tempo numbers, “Rollercoaster” and “Rock With U,” are killer. The former is produced by Rodney Jerkins, a favorite of Michael’s. Ne Yo, the hottest producer right now in R&B (remember the Neptunes?), contributed the dancing “Rock W U” and a breezy, jazzy “Pillow Talk” like love song. Another almost rock/R&B mid tempo ballad, called “Greatest X,” shows off Janet’s Michaelish vocals and a memorable piano line.

If the rest of the album follows suit, Janet Jackson may be back in a big way. But what’s the significance of Janet recording a song called “Rock With U” when Michael once had a huge hit with the same name? Only a family therapist might know that answer. Anyway, my money is on “Rollercoaster.”

Yeah, i certainly hope it does well. But, the pattern has been that as soon as her singles start to do really well, radio all of a sudden abandon's it.
It just sounds like a set up for Janet to fail. That's why like I've said before, I believe LA Reid knows how radio is concerning Janet. He's stressed that he wants units of her albums to sell. He didn't mention singles. He wants the album to have longevity.

R&B radio has never abandoned Janet. Hell, Pop radio really hasn't, either. If you look at her singles standalone, they have flopped for one valid reason or another.

Call on Me was huge at R&B, going Top 5 on the airplay charts (and that was a shit song). It debuted inside the Top 40 at Pop radio, but its callout was SO DAMN BAD that they basically dumped it immediately and it peaked at #32 at Pop radio.

Feedback was way too dance-pop for Rhythmic or Urban, but it did peak at #29 on Pop radio. Unfortunatley, the fault for its failure lies squarely on the shoulders of JANET, who did absolutely no fucking promotion when there should have been multiple live radio interviews going down every day, public appearances, etc. After 2 flop albums, you don't just stick a single out there and not promote it, expecting it to do well. Mariah promotes like hell because she works for what she wants, and I respect that. For some reason, Janet just doesn't give a shit. So, Feedback was a flop.

R&B radio will support Luv no matter what.

Unless you're The Eagles or Josh Groban at Christmas, singles matter to maintain interest in an album and to keep sales steady. To have longeivity they are going to need big singles, and although LA hasn't said it, he damn well knows it.

Then the fools decided to release Rock With U as a single, which is going to go absolutely nowhere fast. So hopefully they will see how well Luv is doing at only 2 formats (Urban and Urban AC) and send it to Pop and Rhythmic and shoot a video for it.

But as of last week she was going to be shooting the Rock With U video with Saam. I was like, FUCK, is he going to fuck up a second video in a row, and for a single that is DOA???
[Edited 2/14/08 9:46am]

So is "Feedback" already a flop? I think the reason for blame is Janet is doing any real promotion for the single. It seems to be getting love from radio, but not from buyers (yet?).

rock with you.. is a GREAT SONG.. but the robotic voice overs.. are so GEEKY, CHEESY, so comical.. i think if they took out those robotic voice overs.. the song would go somewhere....

those songs have AMAZING melodies.. janet really surprised me... but the thing is.. they either start off so cheesy or have something strange in them.. like the beginning of Feed back... the weak drum beats and the distorted voice saying "gimme a beat".. was just a turn off... i think that was UNNECESSARY.. and seriously took away from the song

well blame janet for the lack of promotion.. or waiting until the last minute to promote the song...

if i didn't come on line and visit her sites.. i would NOT have known she had anew song out.. cause i don't watch music videos on tv... and haven't watched those celeb news shows in a while...

she is not on trya, oprah, ellen, etc... NOTHING.. did she even come on 106 park, or anything on tv???? NO....

but the song is still great... so who cares what it does.. as long as you like it... thats how i feel about music that i like..

I have heard Greatest X, So Much Betta, 2nite, Rollercoaster and The 1 (all unmastered pre-release versions) and this album is FIRE! Easily my favourite Janet record since The Velvet Rope.

So Much Betta samples Daft Punk's Daftendirekt!

The beat on Rollercoaster is truly insane.

For anyone who doesnt want to wait till the 26th Street date and you are NYC, it will be out Friday the 22nd, in shops like Norms Music, Record Runner, and Rebel Rebel, sometimes they get them Thursday Nite, but almost always on Friday, and NO they arent Bootlegs, they are the real thing, so if you are worrying about it counting towards soundscan, that number is already tracked in their order.

"whats ur name" and "so much betta" sound fucking dope as hell
i am so pumped for this record now. she really is bringing it with this one. i don't love the kylie-eque vibe on janet (i hate 'slo love') so "2nite" and "Rock with U" aren't my thing as much, I prefer my Jan more R&B than pop, but "Curtains" "Whats ur name" and "so much betta" and of course "luv" all have such a fresh vibe.

this will be the year of janet's resurrection and madonna's biggest flop ever. IM JUST SAYIN lol
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

So Much Betta has a great bridge. Janet singing "I'm what you've been missin' U might need to jump on this." It sounds nothing like the rest of the track, and also closes the track. The final line is "Come on, jump on this," which is just spoken by Janet, like the "I'm gone." from Son of a Gun.

I LOVE So Much Betta because it's so loose and catchy. Anything goes in that track, including:

a) The robotic helium voice with the "So much betta I'm for you" refrain.
b) The way the voice is played backwards at certain points of the song.
c) The bridge
d) The funky beat, which is oh-so danceable.
