Chick @ Catalina & Azar @ Charlie O's

I love nights like this.
(Outside of an unfortunate incident with the Catalina doorman. Sorry Slave, it's Hollyweird confused )

Started out with Chick Corea's Elektric Band at Catalina Jazz (early show)...

...The band played to a packed house. The late show line snaked back into the parking lot.

Chick dedicated the tune Silver Temple...

...to pianist Roger Williams who was in attendance. Chick commented that he'd never forget the night Roger Williams played Chopin at his house.

The standard lineup (Dave Weckl - drums, Frank Gambale - guitar & Eric Marienthal - sax) was augmented by the addition of the incredible Victor Wooten on bass.

...Victor Wooten killin' it.

The techy stuff...

...Chick's Pit.

Gambale Rig:

T.C. Electronics - G-Force (effects processor)
Carvin - TN-1000, Tone Navigator (guitar preamp)
Carvin - DCM600 (Power Amp)
Rolls - MIDI Buddy (controller)
Yamaha guitars

Johnny's Landing (renamed Dave's Landing - for Weckl's introductory solo) & Beneath The Mask were a couple of the set's highlights.
Great compositions played by dedicated and highly skilled musicians.

Then it was off to meet some friends at...

...Charlie O's in The Valley to check out Azar Lawrence's quartet.

Azar Lawrence - sax
Nate Morgan - piano
Roy McCurdy - drums
Dave Carpenter - bass

...Azar blazing on soprano sax during Coltrane's My Favorite Things.

...Roy McCurdy (Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Joe Zawinul, Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Chuck Mangione, etc.)

Quite a night of music from two different Jazz perspectives.

Got locked out. sad My reservation was posted Sat afternoon, but they were completely sold out by Friday nite. I was offered a tight little piece of real estate by the bar, but I wasn't enjoying it and left before things started. Good to see Chick doing brisk business.

Makes me wonder if the RTF reunion will go the club route or the concert hall. Maybe the former at the beginning to build the buzz.

BTW, looks like Sunday night was just a single set that probably went 2 hrs or more. cool

Damn, sorry to hear that.
They really killed it Friday night.

Make sure you don't get "locked out" if the Return To Forever Tour comes through L.A.

Not to worry; I plan to go out on multiple stops when it comes to So Cal. cool

Truth be told, there was a conflict with the Xmas budget. $50 was a little too steep at the crush of the season.

Hopefully, when I am in LA, I'm lucky and don't have the misfortune of PFunkjazz. And if I don't catch in LA then, I'll catch'em when their around my way at Nighttown hopefully.

I was a little more than dissapointed by being rejected after I bought my ticket, it seemed as if the guy at the door had an attitude before we even got there, did you notice that? Like becauee they over booked the show, EVERYBODY had to deal with his shit.

Whatever! The pics aren't as good as being there but you're attention to detail on the rig is appereciated. It was great seeing you again and I'll have to get a complete schedule of shows for the next time I'm in LA so this doesn't happen again.

Here's to a great and music-based, 2008!

It was out of the ordinary.
Even PFunkJazz got caught in the crossfire on that one.
