Fiona, darling Fiona

It's time for her to release another masterpiece. Anyone heard the latest on her activity? And will her next release get her paired up again with Jon Brion?

Their work on "When the Pawn..." was wonderful.

nod

Don't forget the original/demo version of the "Extraordinary Macine" disc. I read in passing on Wikipedia about her working on something new, but it is Wikipedia, so whether that's accurate is anyone's guess.

Indeed. I have good reason to suspect Fiona is wonderful to listen to but torture to date.

Call it a hunch. hmmm

I love Fiona. "When the Pawn..." is true brilliance top to bottom.

Anyone else really dig the track "A Mistake?"

I was really disappointed though with Extraordinary Machine - the version that got released anyway. It had about four great songs (Get Him Back, O'Sailor, Please Please Please, and Tymps). The rest was... confused

Her shows are fuckin great though. Seen her twice.

I dont think she'll be back anytime soon with a new LP. She, like SOME other greatly talented female singer songwriters, is lazy and takes forever to cut an album. I bet she's in her sweatpants in her bed smoking the chronic for the past year and a half solid with no plans to come up for air anytime soon.

She's great though.
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

I'm betting Threaddy knows that nod & still thinks she'd probably be difficult in a relationship - I agree w/ him lol Artists are difficult - sometimes by choice, sometimes not smile

didn't dig fiona till extraordinary machine so i get a kick at all the purist who think the brion version is better...

what i find interesting is that brion seems to have challenges with long term collaborations...both aimee mann and fiona received their critical peaks working with him yet stopped...i wonder why that is.

That is a puzzle. I wonder whether he's seen as a one-trick producer, whether they tap his obvious vaudevillian strengths and then go on to broader approaches.

Not too crazy about the final, released version of Extraordinary Machine, eh? Not even the title track or "Waltz (Better Than Fine)"? I actually love the Jon Brion version of "Red, Red, Red" - I won't even listen to the one on the disc anymore. I prefer the original "O Sailor" too - but even better is the acoustic version over on YouTube.

Never seen her live, though - I found out a week after the fact, that she had been in town and I was super-pissed.

LOL at the rest of your post. She's probably watching "Columbo" in her bathrobe, though.

Was just listening to "Pale September" the other day.....other than that it's been a while since I've played Fiona. I listened to E.M a few times after its release, but since it wasn't my favorite album.....I kinda lost an overall interest in it. Maybe I'll bring it back out.

She was recently mentioned in one of those blind item gossip sites:

ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER:
#2 This visiting male writer at a Midwest university has been dating a very famous singer/songwriter who is well known for her name and heroin chic look rather than any successes in the past few years. Once he finished his commitment at the university he was supposed to move in with the singer back in LA. Only, he's not been faithful at all. There is a cute little poet here, quite the ingenue, who he pursued and pursued heavily since he got here, before the semester even began. She held off for about a month, told everyone what he was doing and how gross he was being, but for the last two months or so, they have been involved in a dirty dirty relationship. They don't even try to hide the evidence. I've overheard people talking about the compromising situations they have found them in, and have in fact run across them outside our local dive bar, up against the back wall being a bit more than just friendly. It's not unheard of here for professors to hook up (and often marry) the students, but it's not looked upon very well, and even in spite of this the writer and the poet have been very indiscreet. Like sex in public, loud kind of s and m stuff overheard by the neighbors, caught and ticketed by campus security kind of indiscreet. Our singer doesn't know anything about it. In fact, she's just waiting for him to finish up the semester and move out there. She's real sweet and the whole thing disgusts me. Fiona Apple and writer Johnathan Ames

Yeah, but being that this is a music forum and all, and the individual in question is, gee, I don't know, a musician - and the original poster actually referenced some of her past work - oh, I don't know - maybe they were asking what her musical activity has been recently, and not going after sleazy details about her personal life, man?

I'm just saying.

I've been listening to Tricky's Maxinquaye album lately, and the opening song sounds an awful lot like 'Sleep To Dream' by Fiona. I've looked online, and can't find any confirmation that she sampled it, but they sound an awful lot alike...

It is.....I read it on a site somewhere. Tricky can't be mad though since he's no stranger to samples.
