OK, if you need Kylie's output during the RN1814 peiod then go with the Rhythm of Love album, not her first two.

I didn't say Janet "copied" Kylie, just that the title track to The Velvet Rope was very reminscent of Confide In Me, yet some of her fans at the time loved to hail Janet as some sort of saviour of originality... hell, I remember getting kicked off a Janet board once in '98 for suggesting that Madonna's Ray of Light was in any way decent. It's like some weird disease of the Jacksons - the fanatics are unbearable and contribute to negative vibes towards the artists themselves.

JJ fanatics are the worst I've found though cos they start outright lying about the smallest of things re: her success and then they start to believe them. Twas well weird when some twat started arguing me once that All For You had sold 12 million copies, with a straight face. Even if it had, why should that effect my opinion on the album?

I don't hear Confide In Me in The Velvet Rope. I hear the 10,000 samples that were used to create the track. So yeah, anyone saying it's original is a bit naive or touched or whatever you wish to call it.

Janet fams are not "the worst". They're exactly the same as Michael, Madonna, Kylie and Mariah fams, since they'll all argue chart stats, reviews and make up bullshit to defend their artist at the slightest suggestion of negativity, be it about album sales, plastic surgery, trials or musical talent. I'm not sure what Janet board you were on, but on all the big boards a surprising amount of shit is talked about her. It's the same on Madonna boards. The only board I've ever seen people banned for saying something slightly negative was a Michael board.

Maybe cos we got Five Star first biggrin

It's not that the UK never got Janet. Control was really successful, as was the Janet album, and The Velvet Rope's singles were her best run of her career over here. She's just never really captured the nation with any one project enough to shake off being any more than "MJ's sister". Kylie had star status in the UK and Australia with Neighbours before she even became a singer.

I think it was the fame Miss-Janet mailing list actually, before forums became the norm when everyone chatted via mass e-mailing.

I think it's too bad, because she had at least 4 projects that were deserving enough to stand apart from Michael and make her into that star. I always saw her as that. I don't think her lack of chart success detracts from the artistic worth of those projects, though.

*shocked* How long have you been a fan? It was only 93-99 that I ever really considered myself a Janet "fan", although like Madonna I just kept up with buying the new stuff to keep the collections complete.

That's how I am with Janet lately, too. I'm sure I'll buy the next one on the day of release with the hope that I'll love it. shrug Worked with Damita Jo.

If British Kylie fans were honest they'd give this fact much more attention than they do. Every Brit under the age of 21 in the late 80s knew Kylie as Charlene from Neighbours. That soap opera was a phenomenon here and in Australia. When she started releasing singles people were buying the record from Charlene, not Kylie. It's significant that Kylie was never anywhere near as big in countries where Neighbours wasn't big. For example, mainland Europe or the US. She would never have gotten anywhere without Neighbours.

That may be true, but you could say the same for Janet as being a Jackson. Would she have been given a chance after her first two albums if she was anyone else? Would Jermaine still have had a record deal into the 90s and would LaToya have made so many albums as well?

The fact that Janet & Kylie continued to be successful for more than 20 years after says more about them than how they started. Jason Donovan was equal to Kylie's status in the late 80s and he fizzled out after 2 albums. Think of how many soap stars have made records and how many have had musical careers lasting decades.

I agree. Regardless of how either woman got their start, they kept the momentum going. Unlike LaToya, Jermaine, Paula Abdul etc.

The Kylie/ Janet debate is a waste....it's like debating which poop smells worse....they BOTH STINK...but for the record...Madonna out-stinks them both.

Oh, make no mistake about it, I would say that about Janet. Let's face it, neither of those girls made it on musical talent. And by the way, Jason was never as big as Kylie. Nor do I regard career longevity as a fail-safe measure of merit. Sorry, but Kylie is really nothing more than the nice girl who lives next door. Her longevity says more about the industry and how it works than it does about Kylie's talent. Same goes for Janet. When evaluating the brand known as Janet, or the brand known as Kylie, you're really evaluating the work of a team of people. That's true with many artists, but even more so with those two. They are products. The person known as Kylie / Janet is the face of that product. The public is made to forget that because marketing, as any politician or journalist will tell you, is all about simplification. You build a personality by simplifying and magnifying. The same thing happens in politics. Do you think Arnold Schwarzenegger or George Bush really make their own policies? Of course not. They are the public face people latch onto. They get the praise or the blame, but they are not really the architects.

Tune in next week, I am sure there will be a brand new "I hate Janet Jackson" type thread. If I had success and bank like Janet, you can all hate me too.

I have nothing against this thread but something I've noticed on prince.org is how white folks love to compare white artists and black artists...

And tend to ignore the strong racial disparities between white and black artists in the music industry...

That's why I hate when people compare Madonna and Janet...

And I hate how madonna fans constantly try to attack Janet's talent knowing well that Madonna is by any mean more talented... lol

I'm sure there are members of the ku klux clan who would totally agree with you on that. nod Black is black. White is white. We should never forget that. Everyone should be confined into a box based on their skin colour. Always.
