Radiohead kicks middlemen to the curb (update on "In Rainbows")

http://mashable.com/2007/...bum-sales/

"Radiohead, which offered its latest album as free downloads last week, has seen 1.2 million downloads of “In Rainbows.” With no label, no promotions, and direct access to fans, Radiohead gave up its music for free and asked for donations, whatever fans deemed reasonable, in return. What the band got was an average of $8 per album sold, bringing estimates of profit to about $10 million. Not too shabby for one week. The number of albums sold in the past week exceeded the launch week sales of its three previous albums combined."

Well this will work with artists with loyal followings, but dont think this idea will work with your average day to day artist.

but prince DID get credit! lol everybody and their mother was talking about prince breaking away from warner bros to do it himself. even now, when he releases a new record through a one time deal with any given label, everybody talks about him being a free agent.

i'm not sure what some people expect...should his name be mentioned every single time another artist does it?

besides, prince didn't give his shit away for free and ask for donations in return. prince charged money and provided shifty service (the crystal ball fiasco anyone?). lol
