Alicia sucks... sorry to tell you

She is so overrated it's a joke.

Her music is bland and boring.

Beyonce is a far greater singer

i was with you until you brought up Beyonce. She has nothing to do with alicia.

Never heard it before, but the opening is a straight rip from Elton John's "Benny And The Jets". As for the song itself I have to say the lyrics are atrocious. Every line is so OBVIOUS and cliched. As a lyricist she is an AMATEUR. Pure and simple.

i think this was the least cliche song that she's done. i mean she is a mainstream artist. it has to appealing in some way.

beyonce can sing, but she's not as good of a singer as I once thought she was. I went to her recent concert and she left way too much to be desired vocally. That wasn't good considering she's supposedly one of this generations best vocalists.

For people who aint in the know...
Purple Rain has been rippppped many times...
I just finished ripping it off (yet my versions sounds a helluva lot better than hers)
But i essentially stole my version from a Ryan Adams Song called "Hotel Chelsea Nights" that also ripped purpled rain
Which sounds infinitely better than Alicia's...
http://www.youtube.com/wa...OuDREgOOKw
So it doesn't sound crappy because she ripped off the song...
It sounds crappy because she did a crappy version...
and made it unoriginal

mariah and christiana get so much praise but often sound horrible. They do not know how to use their voice properly.

the burden with female singers is that they believe that they have to over sing alot...
They think they have to belt the track like pattie labelle
and they strain their voice that way...
This usually comes from singers who haven't been trained well to sing live etc...
Country female vocalist are the best around... cause they don't over sing...
they're very dynamic and know when singing in a loud number one ratio is needed

She didn't sound bad at all. She just didn't move me with her voice in any way. I don't have a problem with people not sounding perfect. I just need a voice that can move me to tears, joy or whatever.

That's true. Alicia kills so many songs with the oversinging. She has a beautiful voice if used right, but she tries to reach people by hollering when it's not in her range.

There is more than 1 musical element ripped off from "Purple Rain" here.

It's not even that good.

The vocals R AWFUL. I mean terrible. What happened 2 her voice?

The rhythm track is pathetic and just wrong 4 the song.

Her voice has come off much stronger before... on live award shows, on the song "Unbreakable", etc... She now sounds weak.

You (check an instrumental of mines on my myspace, Cry Of Love, vocals coming soon, shameless self promotion lol)
All us musicians get inspired by stuff we hear
The key is recreating it the way you envision it,
especially a song like Purple Rain, that almost everyone knows and is sacred in the hearts of million people

it'll probably be a hit anyway
so whatever

We need artist who are inspired by Prince but, add their own spin to it. We don't need someone ripping off PR. Alicia is becoming famous for this stuff.

I liked unbreakable until I heard the record she ripped it off from (LOL).

I don't know who is advising her but, she needs to get away from that person.
She is going to get slammed for doing this PR rip.

neutral Unbreakable's not original either? What song is that from?

It's a direct ripoff of Eddie Kendrick's "Intimate Friends", which is classic Eddie. The thing I don't get is why she doesn't just cover the damn song. The original song is a much slower tempo, from what I remember.

Yes, thank you, someone just informed me earlier today! I listened to a bit of the original Kendricks tune and the arrangement is the same but it is a much slower tempo. With Alicia, I'm sorta indifferent. I've been impressed with how she carries herself in this culture and with her philanthropic work moreso than as a musical artist. I had hopes for her but oh well.

She definitely sings better than Keys though.

The vocals are terrible on this song and she is straining out of tune on "No One". As a musician, she should have a better ear for notes than anybody which makes it so sad. disbelief

I'm talking about the lyrics specifically. They are just a string of cliches. It doesn't have anything to do with being mainstream either. "When Doves Cry" was mainstream. Bad writing is just bad writing. No-one chooses to write badly.
I only listened to a bit of the song, but the link you posted had the words flashing on the screen so it was hard not to notice how amateurish they were. But sure, the other elements were nice.

I think they are both good in their own right and are too different to compare. What Beyonce lacks, Alicia has, and what Alicia lacks, Beyonce has. I just knew that Beyonce was going to blow Alicia out the water during their tour, but people that went said Alicia held her own.

I'd give Beyonce the edge over Alicia vocally, but not by much. She just needs a little more power and depth to her voice.

True as rain man
Bad writing will always be bad writing mainstream or not...
Bsb and Nsync were extremely mainstream in their hayday

there are some lyrics that bother me in songs but the words just have to jjump out at me as being misplaced for me to be bothered by it. nothing in her songs ever jump at me as being wrong,

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! This is why I love coming to this website...musical intelligence like this! I was appauled at her use of one my favorite Eddie songs. Most of her fans are musically ignorant people (not stupid, so don't get bent out of shape). They think she is some kind of genius. Not only do her fans thinks she's a genius SHE THINKS SHE IS A BRILLIANT ARTIST as she has said in a couple of interviews. She LITERALLY steals cords and partial arrangements, puts 5th grade lyrics over them then tries to pass them off as "INFLUENCES". She did it to James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Aretha Franklin, Eddie Kendricks and god knows who else. Now it's Prince and she said recently that there were some "Police" influences on this current album!!!??? You have to think to yourself...If this girl is sooooo gifted, why does she have to go to everyone else's back log of music to try to come up with a record? Real artist have their OWN point of view even if they get inspired by things around them. Is she crediting these people in her liner notes?? I'm surprised she hasn't been sued yet...unless old gangster Clive Davis is paying them off.

The only REAL cool musical person of the current crop of 20-somethings, who is a true original and I take seriously is John Mayer. That dude writes and plays his ass off. I wish Lauryn Hill would get her head out of her ass, stop acting self righteous, and start making music again...I still dig that album and that cd is almost 10 years old!

Well I didn't know Unbreakable was from Eddie but I did know that it was sampled because I remember Sweet Sable song. I pretty much catch onto the majority of her samples and taken melodies.

I for the life of me don't really understand the sampling at this point, but I'm just guessing it's done because a). She's always been a hip hop fan and the majority of her playing was probably by ear growing up b). Her partner she works with was a hip hop producer and rapper, so I don't think they've shaken the whole hip hop sampling thing from Alicia's music.

I don't think Alicia's genius at all. That was marketing. I just really want to believe that she has a little more talent than what's shown. I've heard from people that heard her before Clive that she was good and showed a lot of potential before entering J-records. That person was disappointed in the SIAM album because of that.
