The album is called 'Winners', not 'The Real Thing'. 'The Real Thing' was the first single they released off that album. This was the first album they released without Quincy Jones. Quincy broke up with A&M and the record label banned the Brothers from dealing with him. In my opinion, the absence of Quincy really shows. This is the first 'disappointing' (i.e. not great from start to finish) Bros Johnson album.

BTW, Keyboardist Jeff Lorber guests on the Track, "Sunlight"--he was returning a favor to George Johnson. Earlier that year, George wrote a track called "Think Back and Remember" for Jeff Lorber's "Galaxian" album, and he also contributed background vocals for the track. My favorites on the album: In The Way Dancing Free Sunlight Do It For Love I Want You ... "Winners" was the album that signaled Louis and George's decline, IMO. Not that the album was horrible, but at the time the soul music scene was changing to a more synthesized sound and The Brothers Johnson didn't quite adapt. A song like "The Real Thing" likely would have been an album track but instead it was a lead single. None of the tunes are terrible, but none of them are in a class with "Strawberry Letter #23," "I'll Be Good to You" or "Ain't We Funkin' Now." [Edited 10/11/07 16:17pm] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. The Brothers Johnson worked with Michael. Actually, George wasn't involved in any MJ sessions as far as I recall. Louis played bass on Off The Wall & Thriller. But yanno, this is still a Bros Johnson thread, and not a MJ thread It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Speaking of The Brothers Johnson, does anyone else feel George Johnson's guitar work is not regarded as being more than marginal? Louis rightfully is regarded as a great bass player, but I've rarely read critical reviews of George's musicianship. I disagree.I like this album alot. They produced it themselves (without Quincy) and I think they did a decent job.My favorite songs are "The Real Thing" and "Dancin Free",both of which are at least as good as "Stomp" from the previous year.I also like "I Want You". | |

George is greatly underrated. I like his vocals, his guitar and he also plays bass. He just doesn't shine on the guitar like Louis shines on the bass so he is often 'forgotten' so to speak It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

I feel some of George's musicianship as a guitarist became overlooked when it was revealed that producer Quincy Jones brought in Lee Ritenhour to play the famous guitar solo in "Strawberry Letter 23." George said he learned to play the solo after Ritenhour put it on record, an implication that he couldn't master it because it was too complex.
