Forget the R&R HOF, who do you think will get a Kennedy Center Honor?

Ok, namepeace gave me some advice on starting something like this so here goes nothing:

Now that Diane Ross and Brian Wilson are among the contemporary musicians getting a Kennedy Center Honor this year, what legendary artist you think should get one for the impact they had on the world?

Anybody?

We already have these following:
Aretha
Ray
Stevie
Smokey
Chuck Berry
Tina Turner
James Brown

...who else? biggrin

Michael Jackson

Is there a nationality requirement?

If not, David Bowie as well if he has not already been inducted.

US Rep.

I think the Kennedy Center Honors are the best executed television presentations...they are classy and really put perspective to our culture. They even make crap that I hate (hello there B'weave) look great.

It means that you've made a historic, cultural and significant impact on the world through whatever be it music or the arts or theater or film work or what not. You have to be VERY valuable to American culture, I think.

The Kennedy Center Honors are held to be the highlight event in the cultural life of the United States. The idea was the brainchild of George Stevens, Jr. (who remains involved), and he and his partner, the late Nick Vanoff, put together the first event, launching it in 1978. Since then, the Awards have been presented annually in Washington, D.C. at the Kennedy Center, where it follows an established pattern.

Early in the year a select number of well-known performers and past recipients of the awards suggest names of those who have not been honored before to the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The names, five in all, must belong to people who, in the opinion of the Board, should be recognized for their contributions to the culture of the American people over a lifetime of excellence in music, dance, theater, opera, motion pictures or television.

A selection is made, each one representative of a branch of the arts, and is announced by the committee around the middle of the year, and soon hundreds of much-sought-after invitations will be mailed out. And, because this is a fund-raising occasion, tickets are available to be purchased. At the beginning of December each year makes for a memorable weekend, and some of it gets to be seen by the public in the televised recording, usually aired just after Christmas. The last event was aired on 26 December 2006 by CBS. The 2007 honorees were announced on September 11, 2007.

I believe its the highest arts honor in the States.

I checked to see who has received a Kennedy Center Honor. I predict these two men will receive one sooner or later:

HERBIE HANCOCK

WYNTON MARSALIS

And don't be surprised if this performer receives one posthumously:

LUTHER VANDROSS

I went to The Kennedy Center's Web site to look at the criteria for nomination and this is what it says:

"Honors recipients are recognized for their lifetime of contributions to American culture through the performing arts - whether in dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures or television - each is selected by the Kennedy Center's Board of Trustees. The primary criterion in the selection process is excellence. The Honors are not designated by art form or category of artistic achievement; nevertheless, the selection process, has achieved a balance between the artistic disciplines over the years."

I've never seen anything about people being ineligible posthumously. If that is the case, there are several honorees who were fortunate to get their awards shortly before their deaths (Roy Acuff). But I didn't see anyone who was elected posthumously, either.

Well, it's not like Luther Vandross had Marvin Gaye's baggage and Sam Cooke passed away way before the Kennedy Center Honors were conceived. But nevertheless, we'll assume for argument sake that there is a requirement the person has to be alive at the time of induction.

I'm content naming Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis as future honorees. It's fair to say that they would be excellent choices.

Paul McCartney was one of the performers selected to receive the award last year but said he could not attend the presentation because of ''an inescapable personal obligation.'' The center said then that it would postpone his award until this year, but today it issued a one-sentence statement saying, ''Paul McCartney will not be receiving a Kennedy Center Honor.''

i guess the criteria isn't that you have to be alive but that you have to attend...

Yeah, but choosing not to attend is a little different from the Lord taking you home. From the way that release sounds, it suggests Paul McCartney will never receive a Kennedy Center honor because he snubbed them.
