I guess this means The Beatles and The Rolling Stones must suck to.

well the beatles' first album was only half a covers album, and both the Beatles and the stones had the courtesy to credit the original authors of the songs they covered on their first albums.

Point being that while Led Zeppelin I was about as groundbreaking and original as a covers album could be expected to be, it was still essentially a covers album made by guys too greedy to share royalties lol and there's probably only a handful of wholly original songs on Zep's first three albums (and there are a few uncredited rips on their later albums as well).

Every artist borrows from or modifies the material of their influences in some way when they create their own material, most people "quote" somebody else's material at some point, and occasionally people will outrightly steal or ripoff someone else and it won't necessarily detract from their worth as an artist, and I do like Led Zeppelin but I think they were a tad uncommonly dishonest and sticky fingered, even if many of their songs were fairly creative adaptations of previous songs and even if it mostly applies to their early stuff.

Well, pretty much all of the rock bands back then did covers, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc, a lot of the english rock bands did covers..I think its really sad in a way, because they werent even the orginal people who did the song, and they got more famous off of a song that they didnt. I thought this was really sad and racist at the same time. These black blues performers worked their tails off, and wrote these songs, only for these white english musicians to rip them off?? They were giving them props, but ripping them off...its quite sad, raped by the monster like industry! Pat Boone and Elvis Presley did Little Richard and Big Momma Thorton songs...

The album is essentially a cover album of blues and folk songs but the original artists and writers were not given credit.

This old news among Blues fans extends into Led Zeppelin II with The Lemon Song (credited to John Bonham/John Paul Jones/Jimmy Page/Robert Plant) which uses the guitar riff and lyrics from Killing Floor (written by Howlin' Wolf) along with lyrics from Robert Johnson's Traveling Riverside Blues - You can squeeze my lemon 'til the juice run down my leg.

It become part of general Pop Culture when Homer Simpson said...

Roger Taylor admitted last year in front of the remaining 3 Zep members at the Polar Music Prize awards ceremony that they (Queen) "nicked quite a few riffs from them in their day". lol

Do you have a link to this?

For the most part, Queen wrote all of their songs, and didnt rip anyone off, for the most part, as far as know, but they always did covers in concerts like Jailhouse Rock and Tutti Fruitti.

I said above that he didn't say it in all seriousness. He was presenting the Polar Music Prize to Led Zeppelin in Sweden last year and that was part of his speech. He was just acknowledging that Queen was in fact influenced by Zeppelin.

I used to have the link saved, but it's from a year ago and now I can't find it in my favorites page. hmmm

Okay, then tell, who did Queen rip off?...as far as I know I own all of Queen's albums up into News of the world, and I know for a fact that didnt copy anyone, as far as I know, their songs are orginals, unless you know something that I don't...now Led Zeppelin, thats a different story of course! lol

PROOF!!!!!hmmm Give me a song that they sang that ripped off Zeppelin...Queen sound VS Zeppelin sound was totally different...I'm actually know about Frank Zappa but I'm not too familiar with a lot of his songs...I mean come on, Freddie Mercury, one of best rock vocalist who ever lived!! Zeppelin was more bluesy---Queen more classical! But Brian May is a Jimmy Page fan also, I think it was just admiration, but not any stealing of anykind!

Their Flash Gordon theme has a resemblance to the bass line crescendo from the Studebaker Hoch portion of Billy the Muontain for e.g.

What's freddie's voice got to do with anything?
Queen were ALOT more orginal then Zeppelin.

If you are a big music fan and like Queen i suggest you start getting into Zappa; he was one of Brian may's musical heroes

There's alot of different stuff with FZ. There's the classical stuff he composed, the guitar stuff, the offensive satire, chamber music, rock, doo wop.

I recommend you check out the 3 cd setshut up and play yer guitar or you can't do that on stage anymore 2

There's also all the debates on youtube with zappa. He was immensely smart; i mean well beyond any other musician i have ever saw.

If you want i'll pm you some stuff to check out?
You like guitar stuff? solos, intricate compositions?

When I see the master artists' works from hundreds of years ago, I am just blown away by how absolutely genius they were. I can't even wrap my head around it. Just beyond talented. "Talented" doesn't even begin to cover it. Hardly anyone can even do anything like that anymore. People have gotten lazy. hmmm

The same w/ architecture. When you see what's been done throughout history: the cathedrals, castles, etc. it's just beyond comprehension how much skill, time, and effort went into them. I mean, people didn't even live to see the end result of what they started. lol And the detail! Everything nowdays is just insta-buildings. I mean, they make strip malls out of superhard Styrofoam. confused Pretty soon we'll just have to add water, and a foam parking ramp will pop up. biggrin God they must be turning in their graves. lol

As for music, I don't know. Sometimes I think, "There's GOTTA be some sort of sound or new genre that hasn't been tried yet. I wonder what it will sound like." hmmm

I totally forgot about Lenny Kravitz. biggrin I should put one of his albums on. It's been years actually. lol

lol Yeah it's tough to compare to the days before television! Everyone's all gaga over Jack White because he actually uses melodies 'n' stuff!! I loved Nirvana, but I always admitted that EVERY band should be AT LEAST that good. They just aren't.

You're right, the sheer amount of technical skill in older art can't be touched by many of todays post TV artists. To think of the number of hours Michelangelo spent on his back, and I don't mean on the casting couch, I mean painting a ceiling.

that's because all art is pop art now. it's completely eclipsed and absorbed all forms of art.

But it's kind of always been that way, except that high art would absorb the pop art. Most art was basically pop art when it started. Movements often start as some folk art that becomes popular enough to influence the academic art movement.

It seems like pop art isn't really being elevated anymore.

To say there was only one origanal song is stretching it a little.Even when Led Zepp did cover a song they changed the arrangement and put their own spin on it.The blues references came mostly from Robert Plant, because he would ab lib lines int the studio for the first albums because he was'nt comfortable writing lyrics at that point.Jimmy Page said he did'nt find out till later on(when he was sued)that the lyrics had been lifted from other songs. As far as actual songs are concerned,Keith Richards said it best with "you are what you eat.Eventually you are going to sound like your influences here and there."No today musician is truly original,as there has been no major advancements since instruments went electric.
