I sure miss Curtis Mayfield. I was listening to Check Out Your Mind, Move On Up and I'm So Proud. Superfly is still my all-time favorite movie soundtrack. Great music by a musical genius. | |

Indeed. The song was so deep and well-written that when I was a teenager I felt like I was being discriminated by the white majority in the States (and mind you, I am a white person living in Northern Europe).  | |

On certain recordings, I can hear Curtis' influence on Prince's guitar playing too. Curtis is also one of my favourate song-writers. | |

It's funny that you mention this, I was just thinking about that quote about Hendrix laughing about how he wanted to burn Clapton to death because Clapton couldn't play rhythm. Although Clapton certainly did play a type of rhythm, it was more than standard rock/ blues type---Hendrix was referring to that soulful Gospel/blues- Church influenced R&B type of rhythm, the Kind that players like Curtis helped to bring forth. It comes from being an accompanist... In Charles Shaar Murray's "Crosstown Traffic", he noted Frank Marino's ( Mahogany Rush) comments about the older R&B/Soul/gospel guitar players. Frank noted that if you amped them up, and added some feedback, they'd sound much more like Hendrix than he did... and obviously Curtis was one of Hendrix's big influences, (check "Little Wing", "Axis", etc.)....Hendrix himself remarked of Curtis and the Impressions, "That's a group that really, really needs to be respected...." ... It's his voice that does it for me. Especially on the Makings of You, People Get Ready & I'm So Proud. The latter two, I have on his Live at Ronnie Scott's in London, CD. It's a shame he died when he did. He appeared to be such a down to earth person, despite the tragedy that happened to him.
Don't forget that Bob Marley's One Love is a re-working of People Get Ready. I had to listen closely before I realised. | |

Exactly. You can really hear this influence clearly on the outro of 
...Electric Ladyland - Classic Albums DVD. It's a portion of the solo'd rhythm track to the title tune. This 1 minute 32 second gem also appears on the... 
...Loose Ends CD. Another great example of this Mayfield/R&B/Soul rhythm style is his version of Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone from the Monterey Pop Festival performance. tA Tribal Disorder
