David Lee Roth Back With Van Halen

POSTED: 9:22 am CST February 4, 2007

LOS ANGELES -- The rock group Van Halen is planning a summer reunion.

The group announced that singer David Lee Roth will rejoin them for a 40-city North American tour. In a statement on the group's Web site, Guitarist Eddie Van Halen said he's excited "to get back to the core of what made Van Halen."

No specific dates have been named.

It will be the first time that Roth performs live with the band since 1984, when he was replaced by Sammy Hagar. The group had a brief reunion with Roth in 1996. That produced two new songs but no tour.

Van Halen will be minus its original bassist, Michael Anthony. He was replaced by Eddie Van Halen's 15-year-old son Wolfgang late last year.

cool

Great news except that in my opinion, it is not the ORIGINAL VH without Michael Anthony.

Eddie and Alex's egos again come up to the surface to ruin a chance at something truly great.

I will be there when they come to the SF Bay Area, but it will not be as great as it could have been with Michael Anthony.

I agree with Sowhat. Michael Anthony is essential. And frankly, DLR is a shadow of his former self, and I don't know if Eddie has recovered from his alcohol addiction.
Nevertheless, this tour should be a WORLD tour and not just an USA tour like they did with the previous Van Haggar Reunion.

Unfortunately I doubt it. On the "Van Haggar" reunion tour, the first night I saw VH in San Jose, Eddie was clearly under the influence. His playing was sloppy and he actually started crying on stage (it looked like he kept telling Sammy that his back or hip was hurting).

The next night in Oakland, Eddie was sober and playing much better.

Michael Anthony seems to be firmly entrenched in Sammy Hagar's The Other Half band...

I think the main problem could be, not so much age and how will Dave look now on stage doing those kind of moves, but health, Eddie obviously had issues with alcohol, but everyone forgets he had 2 hip replacement surgeries and a cancer scare. Any form of back or hip surgery could possibly end any performing career, and obviously will have an effect on any movement the person tries to make. A bigger issue with this reunion than any other group, is that they tried it before and it failed, so its become almost a running joke now. And also without Michael Anthony, the higher harmonies are gone, so Dave is really the only one in that band that will be singing any vocals

Glad Dave's back but distrubed by the fact that Micheal Anthony was replaced by Eddie's kid! I think the change ups every five seconds speak a hellvu a lot more about Eddie's behavoir than David's (or Sammy's).

Exactly. Eddie's ego is the real problem (not excusing David's ego by any means).

Actually on the Sammy Reunion tour he was the only musician who actually had gotten better over the last 15 years.

Yeah I'm a fan of the original VH. I was hoping the original four would reunite. The 96 MTV thing got everybody all hyped up then they went a different route with Van Halen III and then they reunited in 2004 with Sam which was a letdown. And now that Dave might be back they have stipulations about Mike being out and Wolfie being in.

So they can't just reunite without some kind of extra ca-ca.
