80's r&b song of the day (1987)

Only You Can Make Me Happy-Surface

so timeless isn't it? It would totally fit in today since it has the same elements some of today's r&b music does. Music with snaps and a piano hook. I can't believe it's 20 Y.O.

I love "Happy"! It's one of their best.

Their 1986 self-titled debut album is one of my favs music

The big hit on this album is the breezy, infectious "Happy".The other slow/midtempo tracks are also superb..."Let's Try Again" and "Lately" are excellent late-80s slow jams. The best track is the haunting "We're All Searching",a truly mesmerizing song with an addictive hook ("there's magic all around...in our life...to be found") that stays in your head. The uptempo tracks are decent.I like "Lady Wants A Man".However,it's the slower songs that really grab your attention. These guys specialized in soulful mood music...the type of stuff that sounds good on Quiet Storm radio.

Their second album featured their signature hit, "Shower Me With Your Love." This song was so popular (#1 R&B and #5 Pop) that, as long as you didn't royally screw it up, you'd virtually guarantee a win on "Showtime at the Apollo" (and the same thing applied to Johnny Gill's "My, My, My")! That album had a bunch of hit singles, including two more #1 hits, "Closer Than Friends" and "You Are My Everything." The lead single from their third album, "The First Time," hit #1 on both charts. The other main singles were "All I Want Is You" (featuring Regina Belle) and "Never Gonna Let You Down."

The second album is very good. This time around, the uptempo songs were even better. The first single "I Missed" is a jam!

They lost me with the third album neutral The songs are sappy and boring."The First Time" is the most tepid song they ever did.I wasn't feeling this album at all.Their first album remains their best work.

This thread reminds me,I seriously need to get a Surface Greatest Hits CD lol I have the individual albums but I want all the good songs on one disc. This one looks like the best compilation to get:

Happy
The First Time
Gotta Make Love Tonight
Can We Spend Some Time Together
Hold On To Love
Never Gonna Let You Down
Don't Wanna Turn You Off
All I Want Is You
Closer Than Friends
I Missed
Lately
Let's Try Again
We're All Searching
Shower Me With Your Love

it includes "We're All Searching" music

That's definitely the best compilation. They missed "You Are My Everything" (the hell?), but that's the only real gripe.

BTW, I like "The First Time." It's not as enthusiastic as their other hits, but I think it has a certain charm. Besides, it's gorgeous, especially the "wiped the tears awaaaaay" part. music
