The music of Ms Phyllis Hyman

A legend we lost too soon.. a underrated diva..

I have recently become a huge fan in the last few yrs.. after first hearing about her music in a E Lynn Harris novel.

Now some of her music has become a mainstream in my life..

classics like..

Just another face in the crowd
Living in Confusion
Loving You, Losing You
Meet Me on the Moon
I refuse to be lonely
Somewhere in my Lifetime
The love too good to last
Betcha by Golly Wow

2 mention a few..

any HYMAN fans out there??

Phyllis was awesome. Her voice (like Karen Carpenter's) was one where you'd always stop what you were doing and listen to her.

I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back.
I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.
I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish.
And I am

I still remember her last hit, "When You Get Right Down to It," like it was yesterday.

I still feel troubled by her suicide letter when said "I'm tired!".

remember when Mo'Nique was introducing the show @ the apollo when they found her dead in the dressing room.

Miss Mo'Nique handled the crowd very well, I was very supriced.

I remember coming back from school with BET play her videos/interviews NON-STOP which continued for 2 days,,,,right then and there I realized that she died.

I bought her last album then "I Refuse To Be Lonely" which includes the haunting prophetic song "Give Me One Good Reason To Stay" which sums up her suicide.

She and Donny Hathaway struggled with the SAME enemy; self-depression. They didn't believe that people actually loved them, which is a doggone dirty shame.

Love Phyllis but I still can't listen to her music without feeling sad so the result is I don't listen as often as I'd like.

I Can't Stand This Living All Alone and Old Friend in particular make me misty.

I REFUSE TO BE LONELY is one of the saddest albums I've ever heard. I remember when she died. I was working at a record store and and a woman came in and was looking for her cd's...she told me she had killed herself. I was not too familiar with her music and I bought a best-of collection and fell in love....when LONLEY came out...it haunted me for a long time. I was going thru some stuff of my own and 'Give Me One Good Reason To Stay' said it all for me....I get chills now thinking about it....gone too soon .

peace
Every minute of last night is on my face today....

There's this myth going on about Donny getting "killed" as opposed to the suicide story. Heard alot of bullshit, one that he's an FBI target(don't know why), the other says that he was killed for a homosexual motive,,,and alot of other stuff I 4got about.

I love my people, but they tend to exaggerate the death of their own and make a conspiracy theory out of it. Like the last rumor I heard about somebody pluging machine OFF Luther Vandross shrug

I'm not saying I don't BELIEVE that, but unless there's an evidence that prove otherwise, I'm sticking to the "suicide" version of the story.
