Sorry, didn't realise that the scan would be that large!

I can only offer a UK perspective of doing session work. I've only ever had to read music two times for a session, so it's not that important at all. Having said that, I'm glad that I could sightread for those sessions though! What a snobby attitude though for those musicians you mentioned in Nashville to have...I know enough players who have an amazing feel and ear to their playing but can't read a note.

Prince and Lewis Taylor would be my ideal total musicians.

It's on my "this week" shopping list. I'll probably get it tonight at Tower (while I still can). An ex turned me on to Jonatha (for which I'll forever be grateful); she had that first "Story" album. I'd caught them when they performed "So Much Mine" on "The View," years ago but lost track of them. I've gotten nearly all JB's albums since (still need to nab her live CD, too).

I caught JB here in Nashville about a year ago at an intimate venue; the setting was close enough for me to watch her flawless acoustic work. She's amazing, and her band was incredible.

Yup. She's an encouragement because of her sheer talent. But the lack of industry love for her -- despite that talent -- can be discouraging, too.

Well, with all due respect, I can tell you the top cats in Nashville have been known to be cruel to wanna-be session cats who are killers but illiterate.

It might be snobbery, but it's a fact of life in many places: If you can't read (and read well), prepare to be dissed.

You're right I've heard about the "Block-out" in nashville. but, it reminds me of how being an elitist is soooo wrong & assbackwards. There are indigenous people who make cultural artifacts/music, where their techniques are often Studied, yet these very same people would NOT be allowed to teach "their OWN culture" unless they had adegree from an institution that learned & teaches this craft taught by the "indigenous Ones ?!?" Something's really wrong here ?
The best that usually happens is a guilty-ridden & long overdue "Honorary Doctorate ?!?"

If I could just interject something here, when kidsgirl stated that Prince "writes" I took it to mean that he writes songs, meaning lyrics. She never said he writes music. She never said he reads music. She only said that he writes.

And that he does.

I'll butt out now. giggle

Really and truly I'm done with this mess. I've got a life away from this board and it does take priority, so I've faded from battling with you.

However, I do want to respond to your "challenge". It appears your skills at reading and interpretation led you to infer that I work professionally in the commercial music industry. Nothing like that was inferred and you will not find me on anybody's recording session. There's nothing for me to upload for your edification, so it's meaningles and contrary to the point of the debate. You, and others allied with you, should go back and review to find where I said Prince (or any non sight-reader) was not "gifted" or "creative". I know the word "illiterate" carries a very pejorative connotation and thus prevented the fanbots from reading objectively.

Please post it if you find it.

Suffice, to say, I have had a pretty thorough education in music and I, at least, know how to sight-read and even transcribe. I'll be the first to admit my writing skills are subpar. Furthermore, be aware that one can make a very comfortable living in music away from the consumerist-driven recording industry.
There are many avenues open to pursue.

(I will cop to the fact that the initial post, simply stating Prince does not read or write, was thrown up to plug the Eric Leeds interview used in Cole's research. My only objective was to stimulate interest in THE LAST MILES, but your moronic antagonism rubbed me the wrong way that morning).

Feel free to comment on my posts. I'll be more than happy to clue you in when you need it.

Music is a language. There is no crime in knowing how to read and write it just like any other language. Not knowing how to read or write it does not prevent you from speaking it, although it does make you illiterate. NOw let's be done with this because no one that reads or writes music would even question that.

Damn, where were you earlier ?
Talk to ya Boy, but don't forget BK...there are MANY Brilliant Minds out there
who DO NOT have a command on the "King's English" MJ comes to mind.
And,Prince's use of "wordplay" is just brilliant man. Some thought he was either
"illiterate" or "shy" when all he could do was flash the no.FOUR at Dick Clark in '79

Facts are facts, but not reading/writing doesn't mean someone can't function musically (you just don't get a lot of sessionwork). Not reading or writing certainly calls into question claims of songwriting prowess when only a single composer is credited.

For the most part, George Clinton shared credits with Bernie Worrell (can't speak much on delivering royalty payments) and William Collins, but even Bootsy doesn't read music.
[Edited 10/15/06 6:49am]

Don't know if I agree with this. With programs like Digital Performer or Cubase,U can play a part into the squencer and the program will transcribe what u played into sheet music. It's not that difficult 2 do.
