80's Tune of The Day: "Mama Used to Say" by Junior

Does anybody remember this song from 1982? I recently rediscovered song, and forgot how much I love it.

Ooh
Yeah, girl

Said a small boy once asked, When will I grow up
When will I see what grownups do see...
In his fight to come of age, he would have to know the age
To be recognized is when I'm not unmasked

And mama used to say, Take your time, young man...
Mama used to say, Don't you rush to get old...
Mama used to say, Take it in your stride...
Mama used to say, Live your life...

As the years went rushin' by he would cut down on his age
He would tell his girl of how it used to be
How his mommy passed away, but these lines she would say
And at the time he couldn't understand

Mama used to say, Take your time, young man...
Mama used to say, Don't you rush to get old...
Mama used to say, Take it in your stride...
Mama used to say, Live your life...

You're young, so young, don't hold on back
Do all you want to do
Now is the time for you to stride
For you to get better in what you are doin', oh

Now is the time for you to stride
For you to get better in what you are doin', oh

A small boy once asked, When will I grow up
When will I see what grownups do see...
In his fight to come of age, he would have to know the age
To be recognized is when I'm not unmasked

And mama used to say, Take your time, young man...
Mama used to say, Don't you rush to get old...
Mama used to say, Take it in your stride...
Mama used to say, Live your life, live your life, live your life, oh...

Hey, mama used to say, Take your time, young man...
Mama used to say, Don't you rush to get old...
Mama used to say, Take it in your stride...
Mama used to say, Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey...

Ooh
Ooh
Mama used to say, ooh...
Mama used to say, ooh...
Mama used to say, ooh...
Mama used to say, ooh...
Mama used to say

Threads on this song seem to pop up all the time. It's a good un. Call me crazy but for some reason I can really see Whitney covering this. "Bobbay".

I LOVE this song. Pure 80's funk!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

i loved the innocence of this song. Didn't Junior used to wear some big ole glasses? Or am I confusing him with someone else?

I also love...."Too Late". As funky as the song is, the subject matter was very deep. I think it was the first time the subject matter was touched.

OMG, ya'll won't believe this, but I was watching a rerun of the sitcom "Martin" last night, and this song was mentioned! lol Gina and Martin were arguing about something, and Gina kinda said under her breath in response to something Martin said, "Mama's boy!" Martin says in response, "What did you just say, Gina?". Gina then starts singing, "Take your time, young man, mama used to say, don't you rush to get old!" Martin then says something like, "Yeah, Gina, I know the song!" lol Couldn't believe that right after I started a thread about this song, I would see it mentioned on a sitcom. Too damn strange! lol
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
