Well as funk is an outgrowth/subgenre of soul, Aretha Franklin certainly qualifies (Rock Steady is one of the best funk tunes of the early seventies in my humble opinion).

You better throw Mary J. Blige's name in the hat.

I also would consider Lyn Collins, The Female Preacher.

THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

Come to think of it, that's why all my favorite artists have been mostly men. Funk was pretty much a male dominated genre with a few exceptions such as Klymaxx and Madame X. Skyy was pretty good (a funk group with a female singing lead on many songs). Teena Marie was great too. She had a lot of help from Rick James though. Her music when she left Motown (and Rick) was much weaker (less funky). I guess my point is, behind every great woman, there's a great man. lol

Oh hell yeah!!! THIS is where Madonna got most of her nasty ideas from. Betty Davis was sometimes too controversial for the underground. But she still rocks!

Got madrespect for Mary but i personally don't consider her directly as funk , more as one of the 1rst Urban hiphopsoul diva's .

Although Klymaxx hitted off good on their own with Meeting In The Ladiesroom
, and Bernadette Cooper did solid work on her own solo-debut & with Madame X .
But before that era , their 2nd release , Girls Will Be Girls included indeed partly production from Jam & Lewis , Leon Sylvers III and finally Stephen Shockley & Otis Stokes from Lakeside thumbs up!

Another group worth to mention is Magic Lady .

Incredible funkjams on their Hot'N Sassy album from 1982 ( above ) and selftitled album from 1988 ( below )

I would disagree, since a lot of rap's energy and core sound came from funk music. A look at Mary J. Blige's catalog and she has quite a few jams among her songs.

I would disagree, since a lot of rap's energy and core sound came from funk music. A look at Mary J. Blige's catalog and she has quite a few jams among her songs.

Yeah , there were sampled songs in her work like "All Night Long" from The Mary Jane Girls , another one from the Rick James camp done in "Love Is All We Need" masterfully produced by Jam & Lewis , the poppin' bass in "Be Happy" sounds also like a sampled one , and a few slow jams like "My Life" includes "My Life In The Sunshine" from Roy Ayers + one track used Kool & The Gang's "Summer Madness" .
Some of those tracks are done great on her live-cd from somewhere in the mid to late 90's ( Audrey Wheeler who was from former dancefunkgroup Unlimited Touch , leadsinger on Jeff Lorber's "Step By Step" and who is Will Downing's wife btw , joined as 1 of the background-vocalists )
That live-album is actually the only cd i have from her because of the powerfull band performing on it . A later song she recorded which i dig for the funky vibe in it is "Dance With Me" + the mellower "All That I Can Say" .
In her other slowjams which i've heard so far i don't feel that much funk .
.
