DANITY KANE DO!

Bad Boy/Atlantic Making of the Band 3 Stars Top OutKast; Mana, Paris Hilton, Kelis, Lamb of God, Vandross Debut Top 10

August 29, 2006

Repeat after us. TV sells records. Especially reality television.
Diddy’s girl group Danity Kane ride their starring roles in MTV’s Making of the Band 3 to 215k in sales and the #1 slot on this week’s HITS Top 50.

Kane is one of seven newcomers to the Top 10, with LaFace/ZLG’s OutKast grabbing #2 with the Idlewild soundtrack. The Universal Pictures film finished in the Top 10 box office after opening last Friday, but its disappointing take probably had a lot to do with the album’s second-place finish. Seems record buyers approached the disc as a soundtrack, not the follow-up to the duo’s 2003 diamond-selling Speakerboxx/The Love Below.

The other debuts include WEA Latina Mexican rockers Mana, whose Amar Es Combatir breaks through at #5, followed by WB heiress-turned-disco diva Paris Hilton (#6), Jive/ZLG’s milkshaking Kelis (#8), Epic metal rockers Lamb of God (#9) and J/Epic/Legacy’s posthumous Luther Vandross compilation (#10).

RCA chanteuse Christina Aguilera, last week’s chart-topper, ends up #3, while Walt Disney Records’ Cheetah Girls soundtrack is #4 and Sony Music Group’s Now 22 #7.

Sony BMG Nashville country rocker Pat Green’s label debut (#21), Universal’s Crazy Frog novelty smash (#35) and Koch’s DJ Kayslay & DJ Greg Street (#49) round out the list of chart bows.

A pair of Universal rock bands are the week’s biggest gainers, with Universal Republic’s Hinder (#17, +20%) and Universal Motown’s Blue October (#41-32, +27%) the only titles sporting double-digit sales increases.

Next week, Dylan’s latest Columbia effort, Modern Times, is headed for the top slot, with Epic’s Jessica Simpson and Grand Hustle/Atlantic Records rapper Young Dro (a T.I. Atlanta cohort) also looking like they could top 100k in first-week numbers.

Make the world stop...I want to leave! It's funny because someone on here was saying Danity Kane would bomb and that Paris was outselling it in presales. I heard the single and hate it, so I really don't get this, other than the fact that it has all to do with the MTV show. Very dissapointing for Outkast. Guess Outkast, for all their effort, just wasn't MTV friendly enough. Curse of the modern day soundtrack, too. Very dissapointing because it is a good album.

BTW, I found it funny that a newsreport said Paris album debuted at the bottom of the charts. I was expecting 5, but 6 is pretty much the same thing. 75K isn't bad, considering. Could've sold a hellv a lot less. It will, of course, sink like a stone (much like most other albums). Can anyone post the whole 200, with the totals sold overall?

Most noteworthy is Christina's huge plunge...is that typical, 62%? It's crazy that Dannity Kane outsold her (if you consider it by set).

Also kind of surprised "Ultimate Prince" didn't debut in at least the top 50. I'm sure Warners is pissed that they didn't release it when they originally intended to. I think "Ultimate Prince" could've been the greatest hits title that replaced TVOBP and went on to sell to the public for years....Not sure about that now, though.

Pretty soon platinum expectations will have to be changed to 500,000. No one seems to be selling over a million recently. Everyone has high debuts then sink like a stone.

Danity Kane Is Industry's Newest Cinderella Story
Bad Boy Records? red-hot girl group Danity Kane, stars of the hit MTV series Making the Band 3, have exploded at retail outlets nationwide with their debut album, DANITY KANE. The multi-talented quintet is the music industry?s newest Cinderella story, as Danity Kane is now neck and neck with veterans OutKast and Christina Aguilera for the top spot on next week?s national album chart. Danity Kane?s first-week sales triumph is unprecedented for a new artist with little radio or video airplay.

Bad Boy CEO Sean 'Diddy' Combs commented: 'Many people wrote off these girls as just a 'made-for-TV' group, but I believed in their talent from the beginning. The fans have spoken, and with their love and support, Danity Kane's dream is coming true. Sometimes word of mouth is better than radio and video play. This is the best kind of success, one that comes straight from the people.'

An out-of-the-box phenomenon at retail, DANITY KANE, which hit stores just two days ago, sold nearly 90,000 units in its first day of release, selling out at most stores across the country.

'The formula works like this: Diddy, Bad Boy Records, talented and beautiful artists, and the marketing strategy,' said Steve Lerner, Circuit City's Senior National Buyer/Music. 'It?s the culmination of many factors, and Danity Kane actually brings back the excitement of what the music business is all about - Artist Development!'

'Danity 'Co-Kane'? people are fiendin' for it!' commented Violet Brown, Director of Urban Music for Trans World Entertainment. 'It is great to have a new title of this magnitude!'

DANITY KANE' is already the #1 album on iTunes, with an average fan ranking of 4-and-a-half stars (out of 5). More than 300 fans have reviewed the album. The album's Jim Jonsin-produced first single, 'Show Stopper,' is #3 on iTunes, just behind singles from Justin Timberlake and Fergie, and debuted at #5 on SoundScan?s Digital Song Chart, selling more than 55,000 units. Danity Kane is the #5 most searched artist on Yahoo! and ranks at #2 on MySpace with 12.5 million streams. The group has three additional songs on the iTunes Top 100 chart-'Sleep on It', 'Ride For You', and 'One Shot'.

* * * * *
Executive Produced by Sean 'Diddy' Combs, DANITY KANE sees the five-girl outfit - Dawn, Aubrey, D. Woods, Shannon, and Aundrea - teaming up with some of today?s most successful and talented producers. Among the studio superstars bringing their skills to the album are such hip-hop and R&B icons as Timbaland, Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins, Mario Winans, Jim Jonsin, Bryan-Michael Cox, Rami, and Ryan Leslie. The album's Co-Executive Producer is Bad Boy Executive Vice President Harve Pierre.

Dawn, Aubrey, D. Woods, Shannon, and Aundrea were the cream of the crop among hundreds of women competing for a spot in Diddy's new super group during the taping of the smash MTV reality show, Making the Band 3. Though each of the five members of Danity Kane come from different backgrounds, all have a number of things in common that bond them as a full-fledged group - extraordinary talent, looks, personality, business savvy, an ability to perform under intense pressure, and a lifelong dream of making music.

The sound of Danity Kane meshes contributions from all five singers, resulting in a fluid and funky blend of voices that allows each member to assert her individuality while still uniting together as a whole.

Yup that was me smile, but im just as shocked with DK's numbers, many stores sold out of it. But the smart thing they did was go on every possible show and promote this cd, including a concert a few days before its release. Its all about the first 1-3 weeks if u are a younger artist. As for Paris that 70,000 was what they were projecting, they had projected DK coming in at that number but media performances were the key. Dont expect it to hold though, not that anyone does. But i think if they can sell 500,000 overall in this day its a good showing.

From what I heard they got the name from an amine character that one of the girls created and drew (I think it was Dawn). Diddy liked how it sounded.
