Who are some backup or session singers that struck out and became successful on their own?

Sheryl Crow
Luther Vandross
Bette Midler

I know there are others but I’m not talking about singers who came out with one album and then disappeared or went back behind the scenes like Trey Lorenz.

Barry Mannilow was Bette's first Music director, piano player and vocalist, and one of her first Harlettes was Katie Segal from Married With Children. Bette was on Broadway and did the bathhouse circuit I do not believe she was anyone's background vocalist.

Madonna sang back up for Patrick Hernadez of Born To Be Alive fame

Melissa Manchester was also a backround-singing "Harlette" as was Jocelyn Brown (Somebody Else's Guy?). Jenifer Lewis & Loretta Divine were Harlettes too for Bette, even though they're more theatre/film ladies now.

She's a powerful vocalist,it's too bad her solo career didn't work out.I bought her debut album in 1991,featuring the hit "How Can I Ease The Pain".

Richard Marx of "Right Here Waiting" fame, was backup singer for Lionel Richie.

Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald often sing back up for eachother.

Luther Vandross sings back up for Stevie Wonder on "Part-Time Lover".

Phil Collins was a back up singer (and drummer) for Genesis before taking the lead vocal.

I'm sure there's more.

Here's someone that kinda went back and forth for a while...

...Doris Troy (aka Doris Payne)

She wrote tunes for artists and did backgrounds for Dionne Warwick and Cissy Houston.
Doris also did a stint with The Sweet Inspirations so there's no telling how many artists she's recorded with during that period.
Then she had a major U.S. hit with Just One Look. Unfortunately, she became more popular in England than in the U.S. (typical).
Along with a solo career there, she did background for British acts including the Stones and Pink Floyd (famous backgrounds).

The musical Mama, I Want To Sing was based on her life story.
She played her mother, and Chaka Khan played Doris Troy.
