I HATE this version. What the hell is wrong with black folks? Why do we feel the need to make everything into a "hard" story or else its weak? The 1st story was sweet and showed a three dimensional side to us. Innocence. this version is all dark and stereotypical and probably liked better by most of our people. Even though the message is still overall positive, I get so sick of the ghetto stories. I grew up there. I know the damn stories. I don't need to hear everybody's take on the same ol' bullshit.
The first song was about innocence; this one is about escapeism. Two different messages to the youth. I still respect this dude, though. I ain't feelin' this new version AT ALL.

sad

I'm with you, BK. I still like Lupe, but I definitely don't see the point of this version, unless he was worried about a lack of credibility in the milieu that passes for hip-hop these days. Which makes me sad, because one of the things I like most about him is that he doesn't seem to give a shit about that stuff. The whole, "yeah, I wear glasses and I skate and I'm a Muslim, but I'm hip-hop, bitch!" vibe wets my catsuit.

i get wat u saying, but i think lupe felt that both sides of the story should be told, and maybe that more people could relate to this one

I understand why he did it, I just wish he hadn't done it. Somebody has to take the steps toward putting a halt to this ridiculousness. People shouldn't have to need their music to fit with their lifestyle 100% of the time. How else are you going to grow if everything is dumbed down for you? We are not that different as a culture and I'm tired of shit needing to be "streeted up" just for black folks to relate. That's bull. Anybody from the hood can relate to innocent fun and good times. We don't need the back story on the characters and how their tragic pasts relate to the chorus.
Suppose we did this to everything?
Suppose Princess Jasmine from Aladdin used to sneak out because her uncle was molesting her and two of her sisters had been stoned to death for speaking out against her father?
Suppose the Three Musketeers supported the King because he had personally vowed to to exterminate all other races from France?
Suppose Dorthy Parker from Prince's song was an alcoholic drug addict with AIDS?
See what I mean? Sometimes a back story can ruin the story itself. Sorry to vent like this but I just get tired of everything black being "ghetto". We are not all ghetto even if that's where we came from and we don't all always want to be reminded of how bad things are 24/7. Its just my opinion but the new version SUCKS. He should have left it alone. One day, he too may realize this.
