Co-sign to the 10th degree. I guess Prince invented the "fat tone" eh? Ignorance must be blissful.

Oh, and that bass player playing the "funny looking bass" is Billy Sheehan. Probably one of the best rock bassists around. The answer to why he is playing it - BECAUSE HE CAN.

thumbs up! Billy Sheehan, Steve Vai, and Tony Macalpine all on one stage!

I just got Maximum Security by Tony Macalpine from itunes! Wonderful stuff!

I'll have to get "Edge of Insanity" soon. Billy Sheehan plays on that album.

MacAlpine is a MONSTER, too. I'm more into Greg Howe, though.

Steve is the quintessential rock guitarist...thus he gets very little love on certain messageboards. hmm People think just because an artist publicly acknowledges his respect for another artist that it means they've all of a sudden turned fanbot and worships said artist. There are a lot of artists that virtuosos like just because they like them and not necessarilly for any particular reason. Tony MacAlpine was good friends with CeeCee from Poison. He liked them even though he could probably play circles around each member on each instrument. shrug
I've got some decent live stuff of Tony Mac when he was doing his solo thing. Maybe I'll YouTube some of it.

1) Prince's tone has been far less pretty since -- I'd say -- Graffiti Bridge. Not sure what processors he threw out with his drum machines and computers (if you believe that story he told), but his tone is nowhere near as fat and pretty as it used to be.

2) Only 5?

Eric Clapton
Doyle Bramhall II
Steve Lukather
Robben Ford
Eric Johnson
Phil Keaggy
Michael Hampton
Jennifer Turner
Mark Baldwin
Nick Gonzalez (Salvador)
and Eric Gales,
among many others.

Yeah, I know. But I was hungry, and the bait looked too good to pass up. lol

Thanks. Anytime I'm able to rave about Doyle II, Jennifer Turner and Nick Gonzalez, et al., I'll take the opportunity.

Just for giggles, let's add theAudience and ThreadBare, too... I'm a neck pickup-boosted mids kind of guy...

Though, in Mr. Vai's case, he might insist that church be "somewhere between pagan and Christian."

Neck on the Turser
*Neck/Middle on the Strat

*The position Hendrix help to popularize when there were only 3-position pickup selectors.

And, how did I forget Carlos Santana, whose tone and phrasing had a huge influence on ol' Prince?

Vai is a legend. The movie Crossroads (Not with Britney Spears the other one from the 1980's), played with Whitesnake, 1990's album "Passion and Warfare".

Thank's for the UTube, I added this to my favorites. Have been playing this song here and there this summer. I love how they make Vai's hair blow all around while he is playing. . classic stuff. . very rock n roll. I also dig it when he plays the guitar in a piano position, his fingers are so long and crazy all over the place.

Crap.mad You just get the tail end of Greg's solo on...

http://www.youtube.com/wa...reg%20Howe

...Wonderland In The Sky.
(I guess the Dennis Chambers solo makes up for it.)

That's my favorite tune from Tetsuo's album...

...Gentle Hearts

They also do a nice arrangement of Jaco's Punk Jazz
