WHAT'S YOUR STEREOTYPE?

do you get stereotyped by your musical preferences? it surprises me (well not really), how people assume because you like a certain artist that you only like that genre of music or that you must like so-and-so becasue you like them. disbelief

i get a look of horror sometimes when i play classical or hard rock music. or the "wtf are you listening to?!?!" lol or if someone is driving the say, "you can bring Madonna or Kylie if you want to listen to them." contrary to popular belief, i do listen to other music besides MADONNA and KYLIE. they just happen to be better than anyone else. hmph!

according to people i know, my music collection should only consist of

Madonna
Kylie
(amongst other 'divas')
Dance/Pop
&
Latin

confused

God forbid i should play Mozart, Santana, Sonny Rollins or even the occasional Country song whistling

what have people said or have reacted towards you playing something other than your favourite artist or musical genre that sterotyped you? i won't even get into what people think i listen to just by looking at me. lol

Some orgers think that because I enjoy Janet, Kylie & Madonna I am rendered incapable of commenting seriously on music lol

I guess my stereotype dont fall into this category. I get musical stereotypes based on race. (i.e. I play Funkadelic's MAGGOT BRAIN at work and people say "Why are you listening to that white music")

confused

I don't really have a stereotype, but folk tell me that I need to get with the times as most of the artists I like started their careers in the 60s & 70s.

I guess I just don't get much out of modern music. neutral

Because i'm Black: I must be heavily into RAP. mad
Because i'm Black and look younger than I am: Why the affection for 60s music. Especially Rock music.

When I had long hair and in a Rock group that I must have been anything (Latino, Middle Eastern, etc.) other than Black. disbelief

Between middle and high school, my blackness was questioned because I was heavy into Duran Duran. Mind you nobody bothered to find out who else I liked, but assumed that's all I listened to. So that kinda got me ostracized by those who were preoccupied with something so minor. In the end it was fine cuz I had friends of various backgrounds with similar interests.

My former hair stylist used to get stumped repeatedly when I would ask her about songs/artists that were clearly a part of her generation that she had no clue about. Or if I pointed out some fact that I remembered from listening to the history of rock 'n roll, she would comment that I was born in the wrong decade.
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

I don't think I have been although I've always been kind of weary when I bought or listened to something that was kind of unhip. Actually, I did get a reaction from two Cds I bought the other day. It was Neil YOung's new one and Led Zep's 4/"Zoso". The lady, who I work with, said "Neil Young and Led Zeppelin...that's a combination". I don't know if was meant to be sarcastic or complimentary. I bet it was complimentary or, it seemed in the tone of her voice, that she thought it was an odd combination. I know I've bought a lot of stuff in front of her. Maybe she thought it was odd of me to buy....not sure.
