Johnny Cash - American V: A Hundred Highways'

Johnny Cash's last song to be released

Johnny Cash's final song is set to be released.

'Like The 309' - the last song written by the country legend before his death - will be included on 'American V: A Hundred Highways', which is due for release on July 3.

The album was recorded with producer Rick Rubin in the months leading up to the singer's passing in September 2003.

"These songs are Johnny's final statement," Rubin told Billboard. "They are the truest reflection of the music that was central to his life at the time. This is the music that Johnny wanted us to hear."

'Like The 309' - written about one of Cash's favourite subjects, trains, is one of the two original songs on the LP.

Another Cash-penned track 'I Came To Believe' is also set to be included, and was written and recorded earlier in his career and tackles addiction and salvation.

"I think that 'American V' may be my favourite of all of the albums in the American series," Rubin explained. "It's different from the others, it has a much different character. I think that this is as strong an album as Johnny ever made."

Other tracks on the album are Bruce Springsteen's 'Further On (Up The Road)', Gordon Lightfoot's 'If You Could Read My Mind', Rod McKuen's 'Love's Been Good To Me', the traditional song 'God's Gonna Cut You Down' and Hank Williams' 'On the Evening Train'.

There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

I am looking forward to this! I'll get the 'Unearthed' boxset too when I can justify all the pennies it costs.

The box set is awfully good stuff. A little overwhelming, though. I'm still sifting my way through it, and I got it the Christmas it came out.
