Songs that your parents did not appreciate

A song like "Sugar Walls" my mom had no problem playing, and the lyrics went over my head anyway.

my mom didn't like it that i listened to ministry and siouxsie and the banshees because at a training she went to at her job, they said those two bands were popular among gang members. rolleyes

i had to set her straight a little bit, and then ma was all, "well, i DO kind of like that siouxsie woman's eye makeup..."

Frankly I was offended by the images of 2 Live Crew and Marilyn Manson m'damn self and didn't have a desire to listen to 'em!

And I just knew I couldn't pump records like The Chronic and Doggystyle around my parents. That's just respect, man.

On a road trip with my parents a few years ago I played Pink's 'Try This' album and had forgotten about the hidden track at the end called "Hooker". Here are the lyrics:

[Chorus 2x]
And you ain't nothin' but a hooker
Sellin' your fuckin' soul

Back up! They want you, I swear
You got no worries, you got no cares
All you got is motherfuckers who will jock you
Yeah, you got money in your pocket
And you shoot up the ground like a rocket
You move so fast, lord you can't stop it
There you are in the club swingin'
And I'm just standin' there, standin' there laughin'
All the things people have you believin'
I feel sorry for your ass is out of season
Maybe you should think of cuttin' down drinkin'
Cause you look like a fat rat sinkin'
I coulda helped you, but you had to act out
You don't have a fuckin' clue what I'm about

[Chorus 2x]
And you ain't nothin' but a hooker
Sellin' your fuckin' soul

I saw it comin' through the line like a full back
You're a crack slack, a fuckin' rap back (yeah)
Don't react, you're not fact
Don't give a fuck, yes, like that
What you gonna do now that you ain't got nothin'
Look around honey, you been frontin'
Everybody knows that you're a fraud! (And I'm making records!)
My salutations, no hesitations
No reservation, just cancellation
And if I blow it then I blow it
Cause I'm a poet and I know it

[Chorus 2x]
And you ain't nothin' but a hooker
Sellin' your fuckin' soul

[Repeat until fade]
You wanna try me
Don't you know-

They didn't much care for it. Oops.

See the thing is any song where they're saying "fuck" "fuck" "fuckin'" is just plain rude language. I bet your parents would have no problem with the actual message.

moms: Almost any R&B or funk song that made after 1979
My dad: he's more open to all music except rock and country.

my mom was hard to offend because she listened to stuff like zappa and alice cooper already. her issues were more when she couldn't understand why i liked something. like, she didn't understand why i liked new order because she thought they were boring. that's the kind of disapproval i'd get from my mom about my music. "i don't like it, there's no guitar in it."

Took my mom a long time to admit she doesn't like Prince, but I had already bought just about every CD of his by then.

I can relate. She told me Pete Rock is boring. lol

Too bad he's my beatmaking muse. lol

I'm pleased your mom liked Zappa. I still don't know much about that guy just because none of my parents (stepmother included) listened to him. neutral

Nah, they couldn't get past the expletives. We have a rule on road trips that the driver controls the radio. Normally I'm good about playing stuff when I drive that wouldn't be unlistenable to everyone else in the car and Pink's third album, while a little harsher than her first two, was still pretty boppy. It's not like I was playing The Sex Pistols, right? Then that last track came on and I was cringing every time the f-bomb dropped. I still felt a responsibility to let the song play out rather than stop the CD mid-song. I mean that would be like, censorship. lol

i remember getting the 1999 album for my 14th birthday and opening it to find the butt picture of prince inside, and right then my grandma said "oooh, let me see your pretty record!" redface

she laughed when she saw the butt, though.

"Parents Just Don't Understand" is funny because of the one verse talking about fashion and the mom not wanting to buy certain brands. I don't think anyone's parents would be offended by that song though. Harmless!

Y'know, I think on that same trip, I played the 'Punk Rock Christmas' CD while I was driving (we were driving to Toronto for the holidays) and I casually turned the volume down significantly when Fear's "Fuck Christmas" came on. I think adjusting the volume while a disc is in play is okay, but to stop the CD and skip a song is a no-no. lol

15. The Doors - Light My Fire

ok this one was supposedly offensive due to the drug references back in `67 and Ed Sullivan didn't want him to sing the lyric "we couldn't get much higher" but Jim Morrison didn't change it.

This probably isn't a good example since my parents are young enough to actually like this song.

I think The Chronic is a better example of modern-day drug endorsement.

My Pops was not crazy about anything by Tupac or NWA. Now that I'm grown, he sees the appreciation I had for their music.

NWA was designed to be offensive though. I still find some of it offensive ("A Bitch Iz A Bitch").

My dad hated "Hit Em Up" by Tupac. LOL.

"I ain't got no motherfuckin friends. That's why I fucked your bitch, you fat motherfucker."...and that's just the intro.

I'm too young to remember "We're Not Gonna Take It" as causing a wave of fear in parents. Did it really?

The video depicts an abusive father and sort of a loser kid. lol

See I just don't listen to a record with the F word in front of my parents. That's respect!

My parents are baby boomers.

That said, my mother and father rarely listen to modern popular music unless it comes at them in the form of my personal music tastes, car radio or television.

My mom believes Beyoncé and Destiny's Child "can't really sing." And was equally disgusted at Outkast's "Whole Wide World" song (I vividly recall her frowning up upon hearing André 3000 sing the opening). My father scoffed when he heard me playing gay hip hop, but I'm certain that kind of bias goes well beyond generational differences rolleyes.

Other than that, they really don't care or give too much thought about popular music unless we're in the car. All they want is the music to be soft and at a very low volume. And that they can appreciate! giggle
