I know Randy's a competent musician and producer... he just sucks as a manager and executive producer. I don't get how he allowed two of the best LPs of the last two years to go down the drain the way they did: Nikka Costa's Can'tneverdidnothin' and Van Hunt's eponymously titled debut.

It's harder to take him seriously now that he's on AI and disposing of the talent of artists who have actually paid some dues. sad
[Edited 2/19/06 16:54pm]

What does him being manager/executive producer have to do with how the music companies don't market their artists? It's not RANDY'S job to promote the album out of his pocket.

Considering his dual role as executive producer and manager of both of the artist I mentioned, I'd say he has a significant role in how the company markets and promotes the album. Having a certain executive producer attached to an album is sometimes used as a selling point. Considering his name is attached to one of the biggest musical television shows in history. I don't see how you think he should bear no responsibility in the promotion.

But you're still missing the point: It's not Randy's job to promote artists. Period. Managing and promoting are 2 different things, ESPECIALLY in the music world.

I loved Van Hunt's debut, I think it sounds even better live, especially "Down Here In Hell with You".

He was in Dionne Farris's band, playing rhythm guitar and keyboards (he also wrote the Tune , "Hopeless" (from the Love Jones soundtrack)for her, and she sings background on a few cuts on his debut....

Incidentally, Randy Jackson also produced Dione Farris's "Wild Seed, Wild Flower" album....he was a great bassist, too, playing on albums with everyone from Narada Michael Walden, Aretha Franklin, Bobby McFerrin, Tracy Chapman, Jean Luc Ponty, Mariah Carey, Maze w/ Frankie Beverly, George Benson, Patti Austin, Steve Lukather, Tom Coster and Bruce Springsteen to Stacy Lattisaw, Billy Cobham, Hall and Oates, Bob Dylan, Cher, and Celine Dion...

Nice background on The Dawg. thumbs up!
He also produced Rahsaan Patterson's Love in Stereo.

A few other Dawg album credits folks might be surprised to know...

Divinyls - The Divinyls - Bass
Against The Law - Stryper - Bass
Nearly Human - Todd Rundgren - Bass
These Days - Bon Jovi - Bass
Amused to Death - Roger Waters - Bass
Unimaginable Life/Leap of Faith - Kenny Loggins - Producer/Bass
If I Had My Way - Nancy Wilson - Producer/Bass/Keyboards
So Happy - Eddie Murphy - Bass
Cocker - Joe Cocker - Bass
Rock The Box - Sylvester - Bass
To Be Continued - Elton John - Bass
[i]Something About You - Angela Bofill - Bass
My Life - Billy Joel - Bass
Ivory - Teena Marie - Bass
Legacy of Phylis Hyman - Phylis Hyman - Bass
Matters of the Heart - Tracy Chapman - Bass
Policy - Martha Davis - Bass
Leader of the Banned - Sam Kinison - Bass
The Revolution by Night - Blue Oyster Cult - Bass
Instincts - Romeo Void - Bass
Safe With Me - Irma Thomas - Bass
At Last - Gladys Knight - Producer/Bass
Happy Together - Pete & Sheila Escovedo - Bass

...the man is wide (and not just in the physical sense).

The 1st I saw him live as a bass player was with a Rock group called Taxxi in the early 80s.
They had a minor hit called I'm Leaving.

He was also the tour/studio bass player...

...for one of my favorite Journey albums Raised On Radio.

lol That picture of him always cracks me up! Randy is the reason I do occasionally watch AI. He definitely knows the ins and outs of the business and music side of things. His knowledge of so many different genres of music is quite obvious. He always talks fondly of his days with Journey.

Back on topic - I'm not into Van Hunt. I gave his album a listen a couple of times, and nothing struck a chord with me. I'm willing to give him another try on his newest whenever it comes out.

Here's another one for you...

...eek

And his "dawg-tagging" goes all the way back to those days when he affectionately used to call Neal Schon "Rock-Dawg".

I agree with your VH take.
The things i've heard i'd label very good but not great imo.
It'd be interesting to hear his progression through a few releases.

VH has actually written a lot of songs for other people.. I just made a mix on itunes of them. OK, actually mostly Rahsaan, who I adore. My three favorite Cree Summer songs were all penned by V Hunt (deliciously down, mean sleep, sweet pain) I am SO looking forward to a new album. and I can't believe I missed seeing him open for Angie stone a few years back.. he hasn't toured since! sad

I JUST tracked down Cree Summer's album about 2 months ago and was surprised that my favorites were written by VH. I love his debut cd! But don't sleep on Amp Fiddler either! He's done work with George Clinton and Prince. His debut album "Waltz of a Ghetto Fly" ain't 2 be played with. That album, Van Hunt's, and Musicology were my 3 favorite releases from 2004.

Ahhh! Amp Fiddler! I have "Waltz of a Ghetto Fly" and it's pretty nice. Not as good as Van Hunt's cd but pretty good. The CUT on there is the Raphael Saadiq produced "Dreamin'" - I LOVE that cut!

If you're speaking about "The Carnivale", it was supposed to have been released by now but it just says "Coming Soon" and that's been a year ago. There's nothing really updated on her website either: http://www.ledisi.com/pages/main2.htm
