I love Daniel Balavoine.
He died too soon, under strange circumstances. His lyrics are deep, his voice true, even if he wasn't looking good according to me. Mano Negra is very good Daft Punk (not because of lyrics...) But I hate the latest singers of commercial songs than can't even WRITE something new and just cover other songs (and not the best of what we got)... I can't understand either why all canadian singer come to France to be known, their things are shit. Good voices, but it's not enough...

There`s a great singer called Maria Arredondo here in Norway. She has a current hit here called "engel på jord", or "angel on earth", and it`s a beautiful song

I'm a big fan of Qawwali, it's incredibly powerful, spiritual music.
I'm surprised there's been no mention so far of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard. The albums he did with Michael Brook ('Mustt Mustt', 'Night Song')are a good introduction from a Western perspective. 'Shahen-Shah' is my personal favourite. [Edited 12/28/05 3:31am]
