SECOND TO LAST: The music biz went in the dumper last week, experiencing a 6% drop from the previous week, while plummeting by 11.3% from the comparable week of 2004. The weekly tally of 9.6 million units represents the second lowest figure of the year; in the third week of January, 9.5 million were sold. Year-to-date sales are 364.6 million, down 8.3%, or 33.1 million, from last year at this point.

next week will have new release from kanye west

nothing short of pathetic that Hillary Duff non singing ass is STILL at #1. It's no wonder why the albums sales are lower than a year ago.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The college dropout has graduated magna cum laude, with early returns of Kanye West’s just-released Late Registration indicating the album will reack up a first-week tally north of 800k, with a real shot at 850k.

Tony Yayo, the latest G-Unit member to release an album, is rapping his way toward a strong showing in the vicinity of 225k on his Interscope debut, putting UMG and hip-hop in the first two slots on next week’s chart.

Shooting for #3 are Brooks & Dunn (Arista Nashville), with 100k-125k in their sights, as Joe Galante and Butch Waugh’s RCA Label Group stays on its hot streak heading into the all-important Q4.

And that’s not all, folks. The major-label debut of indie darlings Death Cab for Cutie (Atlantic) should finish in the 70k-80k neighborhood, while Rihanna, another emerging artist from Def Jam/IDJ, should bow at 60k-65k. Warner Bros. veteran Eric Clapton is on his way to 40k-50k, the same range as Cold, from embattled Lava. Another up-and-coming rock band, Virgin’s 30 Seconds to Mars, is off the launch pad and rocketing toward 30k, putting the Jared Leto-led group in a contest with Columbia’s Our Lady Peace (25k-30k), half of whose sales are expected to be on the DualDisc format. Not far behind will be From Autumn to Ashes (20k), as happening indie Vagrant continues to delight distributor Fontana.

nothing short of pathetic that Hillary Duff non singing ass is STILL at #1. It's no wonder why the albums sales are lower than a year ago.

"Why Not?". I like her!

I would take her over Mariah, who destroyed the voice that she used to have.

Duff's a talentless daddy's girl. I don't know why, but I REALLY dislike her.

New Pornographers at 44? That's pretty sweet.

Huh, that's pretty amazing. Nice to see - they're excellent through and through and deserve a touch of success.

she is a product of MTV marketing. They played her on MTV hits channels for like 4 days non stop. She is just another bubble gum pop artist.

On mtv she was talking about one song and she said i didnt know anything about that song they basically did everything for her.

I dont see mariah any better muscially what has she achieved!! absolutely nothing she just sings the songs someone feeds her.

I dont appreciate any off these manufactured artists.

They can take anyone on the street and manufacture him into artist how rediculous
no wonder album sales r goin nowhere!!

really? wink

MA: You are the executive producer of the album. Do you do a lot of the technical stuff in the studio?
MC: I tell my producers to "use more compressors," "make the sound more dry" and those type of stuff. Then they do the sound work according to my wishes. I know how I want it to sound but I don't press the buttons myself. But I really live in the studio and don't like the whole diva thing where you come into the studio and sing and then leave. The songs are my babies and I want to have control over them.

MA: How do you write your songs?
MC: Usually I sing a part for the guitar, then one for the trumpet and so on and on and the person I work with plays the instrument after hearing me sing. Sometimes I write it down on the piano immediately but I don't usually like it.

MA: Why not?
MC: The music comes to me so suddenly and the arrangements can be so difficult that I don't know how to play them on the piano. I need some really good musicians that can pull that off or the idea disappears. But "Mine Again" the track that I wrote with James Poyser... you know about his work with Jill Scott and The Roots?

MA: Yes.
MC: Good, we did it old school. We sat by the piano and he played the keys in which I sang. He's so skilled that he can pull it off fast. He has his roots in church music and jazz which really are my styles. And hip hop and R&B of course. I've written a lot of songs on the piano by myself, songs like "Vision of Love" and "All I Want For Xmas Is You" which I wrote by using a small Casio-keyboard.

MA: Do you write your lyrics yourself?
MC: I used to do it 'cause those that I used to work with got on my nerves. When I would write serious lyrics they would try to joke about it. The fact is, I only started writing with other people when I started to do more hip hop-oriented stuff. Rappers come up with lines that I wouldn't think of or dare to say myself haha. On the new album there are some serious songs that I've written myself.

MA: Is it different with The Neptunes?
MC: Yes, they are responsible for making the song, but I want to be in the studio and choose how the chords follow after each other and that it's in the right key. I decide the different necessary switches that we have to make. With Jermaine Dupri it's usually the same thing, I sing a loop and he creates a beat and we take it from there.

ok maybe she is a bit better then hillary duff. hillary has 0% input into the songs

mariah maybe has 15%!! whats the difference

What she tells her producers i can also tell some heavy weight producer and make it sound like this or that and i dont know shit about music at all

But i do know what sounds good or bad anyone in this world can do that
is that really some special artistic skill( i think u have software u can use to tweak the songs too)

Dupri is all over her album and her videos he wrote all the number ones for usher last yr its basically his work which she represents.

AT the end of the yr u will see how little money mariah made despite sellin tons of records

These producers cost money because they can pretty much garantee u hits they have a track record

Dre charges like 250k to produce each song. and the marketin, videos and these are taken out from artist royalties

you are left with very little money

look at MJ his last album only started earning him royalties now after so many yrs he does manage to sell in europe. sales after so many yrs out r so low to make any impact on his finances

Mariah doesnt have as much success in europe as she has in us

There it is right there. Her voice just gets on my nerves and her songs just make me go ill, with the close exception of Come Clean. If not for her voice.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

If she's only resposible for 15% why would Universal pay her $8 million avance to the right to publish her catalogue

Universal Music have signed a publishing deal Mariah Carey.

The terms of the deal will see Universal taking control of her extensive back-catalogue from previous publisher Sony/ATV, including early hits like "Dream Lover", "Always Be My Baby" and "Heartbreaker", as well as recent tracks and future releases.

"Mariah Carey is well known for her incredible voice," UMPG President David Renzer commented, "but not all recognize her incredible strength as a songwriter - and the fact that she has written most of her best known songs. We plan to champion this strength and the amazing songs in her catalogue."

Daddy's girl? The great thing about Hilary Duff as a teen idol....I have no idea what her parents even look like (hint, hint Jessica/Ashlee, Britney....).

Thissong has played on MTV alot. She hasn't had any ohter hits that were that mainstream but she has had prior number one albums (the first sold around 3.5 million while the last sold at least 1.5). It's not just MTV....She doesn't have a great voice but it's pleasent and she does good pop songs. She co-wrote the lastest. Granted, she's not much of a pop artist and I have no doubt that there some songs she recorded that she had very little to do with, but her songs aren't bad....among the bubble gum pop artists out there, she is my favorite. I'll give Mariah the fact that she is probably slightly more involved in her songs, but I just like Duff better overall.

I predicted the MJ set would sell about 100 evantually (and I'm not wacko for Jacko, just making a guess...). I don't see that happening anymore is ti hasn't even sold 50 and is going to drop out of the Top 200!
Hell, this thing might outsell MJ in two weeks!

That's only because they're smarter business people. Those other princesses will be sunk by their parents. I guess I'm reacting more to an aesthetic "daddy's girl" syndrome. She's such a damn goody goody, working double time to assure us that her shit don't stink, that she doesn't register at all. She is truly the middle point of all culture to the point of invisiblity. And that stinks. Gimme Britney's contradictions over this crap any day.
