Guns N' Roses appreciation thread

Who else here likes Guns N' Roses?

To me they're one of the greatest bands of all time and my personal favourite. Back in the late 80's they saved rock n roll from shitty bands like Poison and Def Leppard. They brought back a lot of grit back into rock music. Everyone should own a copy of Appetite for Destruction, it's no doubt one of the best albums ever made, there's absolutely no filler on it.

Axl was one of the greatest showmen that lived, probably the last great rock n roll showman, just like Prince he did crazy things onstage and wore silly clothes, the guy was a true star. Slash was just amazing and played with so much soul.

It's a pity they split up, they represented a time when rock music was loud, fun and required skill.

lol, that was Axl's appeal, his unique screeching voice, you either love it or hate it. When you think about it it's similar to Prince's scream right at the end of the beautiful ones and Kiss.

eek Wow, I didn't know that -- and I was just gonna give him a compliment because I was very much a hip hop head back then but I still liked 'Sweet child of mine" I thought it was great song -I even liked when Hole remade it - but I feel really weird saying that now that I know what type of person he is - Not that the songs sucks now because of that, but I don't care if the song is greatest ever I won't give anyone props that doesn't deserve it!

They were better than the Stones when I saw them together.

Axl got a lot of heat for saying some extreme things. I believe they came from a disturbed/ignorant person more than a racist.

He was into NWA at the time, and they were into him because each were not afraid to say anything.

Ice Cube had a song about white people called Enemy, but I think it's about a feeling more than a belief. Our beliefs are more idealistic, but the world causes us to have ugly feelings sometimes.

I don't think Axl is a racist, he was probably very ignorant then. The song talks about what he experienced when he first arrived in LA from the countryside in Indiana. I think if he was racist he would continue saying such things, being a person of colour the song upset me at first but then I understood where he was coming from. Plus if he was truly racist I doubt he would've worked with Slash. I'm not making any excuses for the song, Axl himself later admitted that he wanted the song removed from later pressings of the album in the late 90s although this never did happen.

I'll tell you one racist band - Slayer.

Have you heard the lyrics to Angel of Death? They sympathize with the Nazi doctor Joseph Menghele and what he did in Auschwitz. Plus their guitarist collects Nazi memorabilia and as mentioned has a Swastika on his guitar.

isn't that just stchick, I know Kerry King and the others are the real deal, but Tom Araya is not white...and when I was listening to them I never bothered to listen to the lyrics. Is Typo Negative also racist, I mean, in metal, alot of it is an act.

OK maybe they aren't racist but they do attract a lot of skinheads and neo Nazis to their concerts. That's something I don't like.

nod It was worse in that scene in the 80's though. Bands like FEAR...etc I think the scene is slightly more accepting now.

"My Michelle" was and continues to be one of my all-time favorite rock tunes. I simply love it. I miss some of the music ("Civil War", "I Used To Love Her", "Paradise City") - but I don't miss the hedonism, the ego, or the fringe of mediocrity they began to dance too close to.

Use Your Illusion was great, with amazing energy, but song for song it couldn't match Appetite for Destruction. But in retrospect I'm glad they did a double album since that turned out to be it for them.

Guns challenged the cheesiness of Heavy Metal in a musical sense, but they were not much more enlightened attitude-wise than your average metal band. And it wasn't cute like the Rolling Stones, it was angry & ignorant & musically self-destructive considering Axl still can't get it together.
