Anxiety

Annie Lennox, "Cold"
Janis Joplin, "Ball and Chain"
Sly & the Family Stone, "Family Affair" (that squeal at the end still gets me)
David Bowie, "Wild Is the Wind"
Johnny Cash, "Spiritual"
Kier Kirby/Deee-Lite, the entire first half of "Dewdrops in the Garden"
Diamanda Galas, "Gloomy Sunday"
Sinead O'Connor, "Success Has Made a Failure of Our Home", "Troy"

Marianne Faithfull, "She"
Nick Cave, "As I Sat Sadly By Her Side"
PJ Harvey, "To Bring You My Love"
Sarah Cracknell/Saint Etienne "Kiss and Make Up" (when she sings "I don't hate you...I love you", my heart melts, what can I say)
Paul McCartney/The Beatles, "Fool on the Hill"
Peter Murphy/Bauhaus, "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything"
Robert Smith/The Cure, "Throw Your Foot"

Yes yes yes - the Plastic Ono Band album has some of the finest singing ever committed to tape. Mother and God are the standouts.

The Beatles - Oh Darling - anyone who dares to slam McCartney as a soul-less wimp ought to be forced to listen to this loud.

The tramp from Gavin Bryar's Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet

The Fall - Cruiser's Creek - because, despite all the imitators over the years, nobody has ever tunelessly ranted as well as this.

Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.

I beg to differ. But reasonable minds can disagree. Michael is an incomparable singer, but no one delivers it with the soul that Bill does.

"Just to Keep You Satisfied" - Marvin Gaye (you ssssset my sssssoul on fire...my one desire...)
"Muse 2 The Pharaoh" - Prince (his voice is so rich, crisp and pure on this track)
"Village Ghetto Land" - Stevie (the nearly emotionless delivery lays the subject matter bare and makes it even more painful)
