THAT was a great show !!! I taped most of the episodes (Now if I could only remember where I put thosr tapes ..)
It was truly for Music Lovers, not trendies or Top 40 heads . If only a DVD compilaion was issued, I'd be the first in line .
Jools Holland hosts a show in England called "Later", that has a very similar format, bringing in artists from a variety of styles and just letting them play. Episodes of 'Later" now show up on the Ovation Cable Network

biggrin Glad to see that so many orgers were catching the show!! Back then, I felt like I was the only one in my area watching, lol!! everyone would go, "What's it called?... no, I haven't seen it"...but again, how many people were watching TV at 1 and 2am on a Sunday Night?

...

Create it (a good music program where real musicians actually play), and they will watch.

nod

A friend of mine lent me a tape of a similar show from Japan where they had cool combinations of musicians.

Here's a shot from one of the shows...

...that featured Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Roland Kirk, Jack Bruce, Buddy Miles and either Stevie Winwood or Brian Auger on B3. I think i'll ask to borrow it again and make note of other combinations.

Right... that's Supershow, which is a bit different. It was filmed in a 2-3 day period, it wasn't an ongoing show. Currently available on DVD, sans the Zep segment, which is on the Zep DVD set.

Night Music was a great one. Still have a few episodes on video. It's a show that seems to demand a DVD release. Let's hope Lorne comes around...

... It seems like he's traded places with bassist Anthony Jackson. Anthony used to look like this:

I remember this series! woot! music It used to come on after the Sunday sports extra show here in Chicago. I think it was way too avant garde for you typical TV audience at that time. Another thing that hurt the show was the fact that most of the NBC affiliates at that time chose not to show the program, since Sunday late nights were basically a programming wasteland for those stations. It's hard for most of these TV stations to make money during that particular time of the week, since most people go to bed early to begin the work week. I know in my hometown just west of Chicago, they generally show religious programs and infomericals after 10:30 pm on Sunday nights.

As for the proggram itself, it was awesome. The artists themselves generally came to play with their heroes and wanted to do improvisational music or just jam out. I remember David Sanborn saying one time at the beginning of one of the programs that if you were tuning in to see you favorite hits being performed, then you came to the wrong place. It reminded me of the early days of Soundstage and Austin City Limits.

A-fuckin-greed! This show was the shit! And you hit it right on the nose - TOO AVANT GARDE for that era. I wish they had a box set on DVD! Sanborn had EVERYTHING on the show: Hip-Hop, Jazz, Rock, R&B...shti was hella eclectic! Me and my buddies used to stay up JUST to watch it. Great show. Damn shame it never lasted.
