Purple rain in the same way, but has more interesting moments than the complete paint by numbers album thriller

Come on Billie Jean's bass line alone beats the shit outta Purple Rain lol

No, Basslines stolen from Rick James don't compare to Purple Rain lol

They're both great albums. But you know what some Prince fams are like, they just can't accept that a person can like another artist's work more than his. wink

lol

Yeah, they are great, better than anything that talentless tramp Kate Bush has released wink

Prince does it all, great music, great blend of rock, soul, funk, great lyrics.

Thriller, very good album, but what if Quincy didn't produce the thing? Where would Mj be without him?

selling 20-something million copies of Dangerous? Q gets far too much credit IMO.

Thriller has some classic songs on it and Michael's vocals are great, but for artistic creativity and overall stylistic experimentation I say:

Purple!

Both great album...

I always prefered Purple Rain not because it's better, but because Thriller songs have been too much OVERPLAYED through the years...

This is why I'm tired of this album...

Some decent points, but Jacko BLATANTLY stole the moonwalk from that quality bodypoppin guy from shalamr. He was great. What was his name?

I think that you are being ignorant ignoring Quincy's role. MJ is talented and has released great music, but surely even you can admit some of his success is down to Quincy? I mean, its outrageous that some MJ zealots try and airbrush him out of the picture. Anytime he is mentioned, there is uproar

here's what producing means, in terms of Quincy Jones: he arranged ALL of Michaels ideas into the music you hear on record. Mike came up with the melodies, sure and probably some of the basic chord changes. But all the rest is Quincy. And many non-musicians look past how much work goes into actually creating a sound. Quincy did all of that, notation and all; Michael sang his song over the top. Where would MJ be without Quincy? Who knows, but I doubt we'd be hearing the same high level of arrangement/production.

Yep, but I've also read up on Quincy Jones. Mike's best albums (IMO: Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad) would not be the works they are without Quincy. Indeed, the same can be said for Michael, but I basically believe there wouldn't have BEEN a Michael Jackson (as we know him - the bulk of his solo work) without Quincy Jones.

Well, it's pretty much all there in MJ's home demos. I'm not denying Quincy his role.... but I don't think he deserves as much credit as folk give him, is all. wink

well quincey probably had a big role in the sound of Mj's albums, but to me all that means is that the sound would have been much more raw, with less strings and perhaps even less horns and reverb and overdubbs etc. As for prince, how would prince's music have sounded without all the ideas he stole from his friends around him? Granted, it isn't the overwhelming majority of his music, but he did steal things here and there whether it writing or arranging credit, or crediting instrumental parts. Sure, prince has done the reverse (at least on the album credits) for his protege acts, but he's then further stolen credit by defrauding the ASCAP registrations, like how Jungle love is credited to Morris Day on the album, credited to Prince and Morris Day with the ASCAP, and has been documented to have been largely written by Jesse Johnson (same with "the stick" and lisa coleman). The fact of the matter is that nobody ever creates anything purely alone, and even great artists borrow or outright steal from others creatively, and at least Michael allowed Quincey to get credit. Did Michael steal the bassline for Billie Jean? Maybe, but according to Dez, who isn't vindictive at all, says that Prince borrowed the rhythm for When Doves Cry (even if unconsciously) from him. The glorious bassline from If I was your girlfriend? Go listen to sly's Thank you Falletin me be mice elf agin and you'll notice a suspicious similarity. Neither prince nor MJ did everything themselves.

That move is called the back-slide. The moonwalk is actually the circular motion which mike also does. The back slide was popularized by the boogaloos, but tap dancers like Bill Bailey did similar moves in the 40's and 50's.I've seen no one do the Moonwalk (backslide) better than mike.

That is untrue in my opinion. While many artists "steal" ideas from others, I still believe in a thing called inspiration. One does not know where it comes from or how one acquires it...one simply knows when one has a unique idea...it is not ALWAYS a product of "stealing" from other artists, though granted many ideas come from the influence of what the mind/soul has already absorbed. Many artists attribute their inspiration to God, collective unconciousness, or whatever they may want to call it - and in this sense you can argue whether or not that is creating something "alone" or not.

It is not always a regurgitation of what has already been heard/seen/felt through other artists that forms the creation of a piece of art.
Finally, if you truly believe no one has any unique ideas then you are probably turning into your parents!
