Chicago was basically two different groups; the Terry Kath led, funky horn group (from 1969 to his accidental shooting death in 1978), and the Peter Cetera led adult contemporary group (from 1979 to 1989, though Cetera left the group in 1985). The early group was funky and played some of the best rock in the 1970's. While there were some hints of the soft rock group they would eventually become (Colour My World, Wishing You Were Here, If You Leave Me Now), they relied mostly on their uptempo jazz-funk-rock fusion as their signature sound.

However, after Terry Kath's death, the group floundered for a brief time. They nearly broke up in 1980, but then they brought in David Foster to help write and produce their tracks, and that's when they became more of an adult contemporary group. While they had huge hits in the 1980's with their lite FM songs, most critics thought they had sold out. Everybody who mistakes the real Chicago for some FM lite crap that they came up with during the 80s, read, and re-read that. The REAL Chicago was musically deeper than that Cetera-led group of the 80s with all those sappy ballads. The Terry Kath version of Chicago is where it's always been at. If you don't know that band, you don't know Chicago. They even did a song with Al Green. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes. | |
