Steely Dan is probably my favorite band next to Prince. My favorite album is The Royal Scam, but I love them all. One of the greatest bands ever in my opinion, perhaps more deserving the "genius" stamp than Prince.
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I love Steely Dan! I saw them live in Atlanta a few years back. They put on a really great show- Toni Braxton was there. Great musicianship!

Favorite songs-
"Do It Again" "Dirty Work" "Only A Fool Would Say That" "Reelin In The Years" "Bodhisattva" "My Old School" "King Of The World" "Rikki..." "Night By Night" "Parker's Band" "Pretzel Logic" "Monkey In Your Soul" "Black Friday" "Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More" "Don't Take Me Alive" "Green Earrings" "Aja" "Deacon Blues" "Peg"
Socks still got butt like a leather seat...

for those of y'all who haven't seen it, the dvd "Classic Albums : Aja" is also worth getting. Donald & Walter break down the genius of several of the songs on that album, & there are some interesting commentaries by those who played on that album, such as (the also brilliant) Michael McDonald.

Yeah, I love that DVD!! Fagen is hilarious: "Uptown, Baby, Uptown, Baby..." as well as Bernard Purdie ("Another Hit Being Made"!)

I thought that part about all the different guitarists trying out for the guitar solo on Peg was fascinating...They didn't say whose track was whose, (except that Jay Graydon ended up doing the one they liked and kept.), but I read that Larry Carlton, Steve Khan, and Lee Ritenour are among all the guitarists that gave it a shot...

...

Donald was funny with that "uptown baby" line..
(but really, I'm still a little pissed that any rapper would DARE sample the brilliant work of Donald & Walter.. I understand WHY they would, but still!)

I also like in the Aja DVD how 1 musician said that D&W would bring in WHOLE BANDS to try/do certain songs..
& I like how Michael McDonald commented on how "difficult" it was for him to sing those REALLY close multi-part harmonies on Peg..
but he did it, it sounds really good & it's & of the best parts of Peg!

Reelin in the years is maybe my favorite track on Can't Buy A Thrill; that, or Fire in the hole (I love the piano opening on the track & the piano riff before the last "fire" chorus

does anyone know about or have any, um.. ahem
"unreleased" Steely Dan cd's???
(I don't dare use the "b-word")
I recently came across a website that listed A LOT of Steely Dan concerts, back from their earliest tour, through the "rock & soul revue" of '93 up thru the 2vn & emg tours..
this site lists A LOT of good stuff, but of course they don't tell you where/how to get any of it..

(cazzo!)

somebody here might know something??
if so - ORGNOTE ME.

FOREVER down with The Dan
I'll see you tonight..

about there was no good music in the 70's.
When he finished all I said was "Steely Dan".
Then he said "Oh yeah - I have their complete catalog".

Hmmm....I always feel like I'm not "qualified" to tell people what to start their record collection with. lol I'm sure there are many on here that can really lead you in the right direction, but "Aja" is an awesome album, as is "Countdown to Ecstacy". But these are just my personal choices. Arrrrggghhhh! I seriously can't pick just one album. It's almost impossible for me because each one has songs on them that I adore, so maybe someone else on here can give you some advice as well? lol

Sorry, that wasn't much help there on my part. boxed

Have y'all heard some of the unreleased Steely Dan tunes, like "The Second Arrangement" (intended for the Gaucho album), and "Kulee Baba"? If So, what did you think? In the case of "The Second Arrangement, I know an engineer accidently wiped out their best versions, but I thought it was still complete enough....

Big Dan Fan.

While I appreciate all their albums, my favorites are from Aja on.
This is the point where I think they solidified the sound they'd been building towards with prior releases.

They helped to raise the pop music game musically and lyrically.
This is not music your average bar band can easily add to their set lists without some serious effort.
Back in the day I charted out Black Cow and Peg for a Top 40 band.
The background vocals on Peg are definitely not standard fare.
Ask Michael McDonald how hard those intervals are to hear, let alone sing. wink
