Am I The Only One Who's Not Bothered By Aretha's Vocal Change?

I truely hope not!

Even tho its not fresh and youthful anymore lol and even tho its a result of her heavy smoking habit. I still think it gives her solid character,,,not that her pre-channged vocal lacked character by any means tho.

I don't know how to explain it,,,I really can feel the wisdom in her voice right now, I wouldn't change it at all.

She reminds me of how folks debated over Billie Holiday's voice change when she made that infamous "Lady In Satin" album. One thing for sure, its a testimony to all the experiences.

So what do you think? Yay or nay? lol

Nay. I prefer the old Aretha. If her voice had changed naturally, fine, but I don't equate a smoking habit with life experience. sad

Haven't heard anything really recent by her. The most recent that I heard her sing was on that VH1 Divas show from 1999 (I think)... I thought she just sounded same as ever.....

Is her new stuff any good?

Generally, I quite like it when singers' voices get a bit of age and "life" in them. People like Emmylou Harris and Joni Mitchell sound great today for that reason, I think. And Ray Charles's voice was fantastic in his later years! When it used to crack, and he'd produce these little breath-y harmonics.... beautiful!
biggrin

Mind you, Bob Dylan on the other hand..... just plain scary!

I DEFINITELY prefer ReRe's old chops over now; however, she can still hold her own and wipe the floor with most of these chicks out now.

That was news to me that she smoked cigarettes, but I'm not surprised. hmmm

I still like her voice, but I can only imagine what fine form it would be in if she'd put down the menthols smoker

I now i'm in the minority here but i never cared much for her voice in the first place
Don't understand people calling her "Queen Of Soul"
(not to mention she fucked up a great Carole King song with her wailing)

I'd take Tina Turner's voice over hers anytime !

(now let the bashing begin)

LOL. no you're not. I like Aretha's earlier work. I have her 30 Greratest Hits cd, and I think one maybe 2 other after that. But I agree..wailing does not equate soul. Tina in fact wipes Aretha with the floor. nod One of the best concerts I ever attended was Tina's. drool

I like early Aretha. Let's face it her voice was better then. Now she yells and emotes all over. The worst is that she still thinks she's the stuff. I mean she is the Queen of Soul no doubt, but she ain't what she used to be yet she doesn't seem to know that. Unwarranted diva attitude that rivals Diana.

And why do the ones with these great voices resort to smoking. Aretha, Chaka, Dionne. Say what you will about Celine Dion, that girl PAMPERS her voice. Same with Barbra.

Out of all the "voices", Celine's is da best!!! nod And Mahalia Jackson, who IN MY OPINION was the 1st and true Queen of soul. Perhaps Mariaon Andersoon too. confuse

mad Yes. I love Celine. (Really nice lady too. Got to meet her years ago.)I think she's got an incredible gift. However..her songs are all really the same.. i love you type crap. I just wish she would have either better song writers, or attempt to perform songs with more depth to them. I want to go see her Las Vegas production. Wanna come with me? We can bring Harlepolis too. biggrin
