So, is this compilation for me?

Yes, becuase it's the best overall view of everything she's done. Well, not everything. It only lightly touches the rock/new wave love it or hate it album "The Wanderer" ("The Anthology" included the moderate Top 40 hit "Cold Love", which was more of a rock track than any ohter single she's released before) and doesn't include anything from her stellar "Christmas Spirit", which was very tradational. Other than that. it only cuts out a few hits here and there (most notably a few recent club tracks). I think you have to get it. You'll really like it. The only thing that sucks is the 70s era disc (the first one is full of "disco" songs, probably becuase that was her peak of hits) only includes one track representing what many view has her best album, the double album "Once Upon A Time" (also, probably the most underrated since it had no big hits like most of her disco albums did). DSAnthology did have the three singles (I think the title track was only a single in some European countries) represented but it didn't have to make way for the addition of Donna's recent club hits. Cosidering that "Once..." is still in print, and often heavily discounted online, you should pick it up as well before they make it OOP. If you like what you have, you'll be amazed by "Once..."

VC,thanks for the info. This seems like a wonderful compilation, but I'm not gonna buy it.I already have everything on it except the radio edit of "You're So Beautiful".I'll try to download that song elsewhere, lol.I really don't plan to spend another dime on yet another Donna Summer compilation,lol...I have all the other ones.I even have that 3-CD "Ultimate Collection" set.But if I ever find a vinyl copy of the 1980 'Walk Away' compilation,I'll buy that,if only for completion purposes.

speaking of Donna Summer compilations....I recently found a rare vinyl copy of her 1977 "Greatest Hits" album. As far as I know,it wasn't released in America, which makes it extremely rare and hard to find.It contains the 1975 song "Virgin Mary",an early single that was never released in America.

I have the record too but no means of playing it. It would have been great if that would be issued as CD, but there really is no point except for people that want to hear "Virgin Mary". It's funny that those tracks (the ones off the actual "Lady Of the Night" album) hardly ever get their due on CD. Sometimes on imports, if memory serves.

The 3-CD 'Ultimate Collection' set includes "The Hostage" and "Lady Of The Night".This set is an import from Holland,if I'm not mistaken. This set also includes her 1977 theme song from the film "The Deep",another song that rarely appears on many compilations. As for "Virgin Mary"....it's a mediocre song at best, but I am happy to finally have it,since it's so rare.

I have a rare 1975 German vinyl copy of this album.Interestingly,it doesn't contain the song "Full Of Emptiness" (or the reprise) but it does contain the 1974 European singles "The Hostage" and "Lady Of The Night".

I always wondered why they never released any other singles from this album (at least not here in the States). The track "Need-A-Man-Blues" would have been a logical follow-up to "Love To Love You".

Theme from The Deep is actually on the CD release of Live and More in place of MacArthur Park Suite.

Yeah, which is kind of cool since it never appears anywhere but then it was a long time for "McArthur Park Suite" to appear on CD....again...well, not again, but for it to appear on CD for the first time. When was it's first appearance on CD? I'm thinking that it was before the release of "Bad Girls Deluxe Edition". So many Donna compliations, so little time.

BTW, I dug to this thread to brag about finding "Gold". They had it at the Meijer in Ypsi for regular price (they tend to lower them a little), however, I had my 10% AND today they had $3 off CDs. So if you're around Ypsi and want this, for $16.99, I think it's worth it.

My thoughts on the disc are that I've mostly been there done that and so far only sampled disc two. "You're So Beautiful" doesn't sound at all like the "Journey" mix and the music is just kind of thrown in there and doesn't match Donna's singing. It felt like a remix when I was hoping for just a shorter verison of the "Journey" mix (as well as bringing Donna's vocals out more). The mix isn't bad, just not what I wanted. I think that if it is ever released on an "Angel" (fat chance but there's always a chance), they'll release it in whatever original form was intended for the album (I don't think this verison was it). The "Love's About To Change" was a damn good mix! The inclusion of "Dinner" is very welcome. I didn't notice this major difference in the sound since everyone seems to be clamouring over remastering. I have an idea most of the recent greatest hits sets of hers already remasterd most everything. The notes are rather good, although the guy might have made up a few words or was just being pretenious. The pictures are mostly the usual suspects (very similar to photos "Journey" and the back of hte booklet uses a large verison of the "Anthology" photo. It's a recycling of many of Donna's hits albums. "The Greatest Hits of Donna Summer's Greatest Hits" set. It's realy the only one any fan could need. Unfornately, there are so many opitions out there and I think most fans would opt for the more economic "20th Century Masters" or "The Journey" (which may or may not include the bonus disc with "You're So Beautiful" at this point).

And I think I've said this before, but far and away, this appears to be the only set that really spanned an artists entire career, which is probably the reason no one is discussing any of the other sets (also by artists who have way too many hits sets out there). A slight aside, I was walking through the CD asile in Meijer and when I didn't see it in the new release section, I figured it probably wasn't going to be there and it wasn't at the Meijer in Ann Arbor eihter but then I was just looking through and saw the Kiss "Gold" disc and almost ran to the next aisle (where R&B is) and had my figers crossed and there it was. I think there were two copies, in case anyone in that area is looking for it.

Yeah, and it sounds horribly out of place on that CD.It's a shame that they didn't include the "MacArthur Park Suite",but I guess they ran out of room and decided to replace it with a rare single from the same time period. These days, when I wanna hear the "Live And More" album,I play the vinyl anyway. The CD is in serious need of remastering.

Funny, because the full suite is on a Japanese promo pressing of the CD that I have. They had no trouble fitting it on there. And it's the full original mix - not the one that was edited by 10 seconds for the Bad Girls Deluxe Edition (one of the places they fucked up on that set).

With the exception of the Walk Away 12'' Version. What an awful mastering job - in mono, and it sounds like they took it from a vinyl source!

Wow! It looks like they really screwed up the American version of this disc.I'm hoping that this CD is eventually remastered. They could easily turn it into a 2-CD Deluxe Edition (like 'Bad Girls').Bonus tracks on Disc Two could include many of the other songs that Donna performed on the 1978 'Once Upon A Time' tour ("A Song For You","Could It Be Magic",etc). Then they could also throw in some other rarities from this period (the long version of "With Your Love"...the full-length "Je Taime (Moi Non Plus")...the "Theme from The Deep"....the extended version of "Heaven Knows" (it's over 7 minutes long)...the possibilities are endless! Why aren't they doing this?!

I first shuddered at the thought of them remastering it in mono. But it could have simply been mono to begin with. I know songs as late as 1984 mixed in mono.

Edit:
I don't care specifically about "Walk Away", just when remastering isn't at its most pristine.

Turns out I only care about "Love To Love You Baby" and "I Feel Love".
