Laura Nyro

Read an article on this artist the other day and was so impressed that I ordered one of her albums 'Eli And The Thirteenth Confession'

I've only heard brief snippits of some songs so I've basically bought it blind! eek

Any Laura fans on the Org? What can I expect?

I love Laura Nyro. She's a fantastic songwriter and singer. You bought her best album. She died a few years ago though only 50 years old.

biggrin Laura's one of my Favorites!!

some people can't get into her because her voice and a lot of her music is so stylisyically adventurous, but her work spans rock, jazz folk, pop, soul, and gospel, and her songs have been covered by Barbara Streisand, The 5th Dimension, Frank Sinatra, Manhattan Transfer, Blood Sweat and Tears, Three Dog Night, Carmen McCrae, Jonatha Brooke, Suzanne Vega, George Duke, Sweet Honey In The Rock, etc...

She has recorded with artists like Labelle and Todd Rundgren,

...Her admirers included Miles Davis, and Joni Mitchell, who recently noted: "The only woman I don't mind being compared to is Laura Nyro. Her, you can lump me in with....."

her later music (1984-1996) was lyrically more concerned with Motherhood, Women's rights and New age issues, but the music remained vibrant, jazzy, and soulful...

My favorite albums of hers are:

The First Songs

Mother's Spiritual (this one's my Favorite, but that's me
)

Live: The Loom's Desire

Live at the bottom Line

Eli and the 13th Confession (Probably her most "popular" record, three of the songs here were hits when covered by other artists {5th dimension, Three dog Night}...kind of like "Brill building" pop meets soul)....

Walk the Dog and Light the Light

Angel In the Dark

I like her albums. she's hard to digest though. some of the songs will
hit you instantly but others are taking me some more time.

But I like that. It shouldn't be too easy. As long as an album can be
with you for a long time before it gets boring it's alright with me.

Sometimes her screeching can get a bit much for me though, but I've
got that with Joni as well and she's another one of my faves.

"The Last Time I Saw Richard" is one of my all time fav songs and it
contains a few high notes where I go "ouch jeez"
