hmmm

A classic since the late 40s, Nat King Cole's version of "The Christmas Song" might crack that coffin. nod

The contemporary version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Luther Vandross might deserve some consideration also.

2 examples of "classic songwriting" that have been around since the 40s, proving that a well-written song is timeless.

Bit of trivia...
According to ASCAP's 2003 performance data, the 10 most performed holiday tunes of the 21st century:

1. Santa Claus Is Coming to Town
2. The Christmas Song *
3. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas *
4. Winter Wonderland
5. White Christmas
6. Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
7. I'll Be Home for Christmas
8. Jingle Bell Rock
9. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
10. Little Drummer Boy

("This Christmas" IS a great tune)

I love a great deal of Christmas songs (Lennon, Mud, Bing, Elvis, Darkess), but I would have to say, to me the best is actually fairly recent. The best ever xmas tune in my eyes is...

Mariah Carey - All I want for Christmas Is You!

Its got everything. Sleigh Bells, Santa. I love it!

I'm not sure if this is what you'd call a 100% bona fide 'Crimbo' song but that's what it was released for.

The Pogues & Kristy MacColl - "Fairytale Of New York".

Probably my Crimbo favourite nod

They never play it anyomre because he got locked up for being a paedophile.
Each time a record is played on air, the artist gets royalty money.

I think it's pretty good that they stopped playing it and hence he stopped getting paid. Don't you?!

Donny Hathaway "This Christmas"
Vanessa Williams "The Carol of the Bells"
Nat King Cole "The Christmas Song"
Prince "Another Lonely Christmas"
CeCe Winans "Do You Hear What I Hear"
John Coltrane "My Favorite Things"
