Ashford and Simpson Appreciation thread: what's your favorite song by them?

Here's mine...

music "It Seems To Hang On" (1978) music

(written and composed by Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson)

Is it daylight,I can't tell no more
never had this condition before

everywhere I turn (it seems to hang on)
everything I do (it seems to hang on)
was I mistaken (it seems to hang on)
about you (it seems to hang on)

aside from wantin' you (it seems to hang on)
aside from needin' you (it seems to hang on)
let me give you some idea (it seems to hang on)
it ain't just the tears, the fact of it is...

(chorus)
I can't go nowhere
I can't be the same
I don't know my name
I can't understand just why

(It seems to hang on) Oh,ooh, why
(It seems to hang on)

Wasn't I clever
as only I can be
but tell me what's happenin'
what's botherin' me,yeah yeah

Aside from dreams I had
nothing else exists
honey,it's you I miss
don't leave me like this

(chorus)
I can't go nowhere
I can't be the same
I don't know my name
I can't understand just why

(It seems to hang on)why
(It seems to hang on)

Like a snowball rollin' down the hill (it seems to hang on)
I look behind me,it's there still (it seems to hang on)
Ooh,like a shadow it follows
Oh...oh..oh...oh...oh

Oh...loose me,loose me,loose me...please

(chorus)
I can't go nowhere
I can't be the same
I don't know my name
I can't understand just why

(It seems to hang on)
(It seems to hang on) I can't shake it
(It seems to hang on) I can't shake it
(It seems to hang on)

Like a snowball rollin' down the hill (it seems to hang on)
I look behind me,it's there still (it seems to hang on)
Ooh,it follows like a shadow
Oh..oh...oh...oh...oh..oh

Oh...loose me,loose me,loose me....please!

I still listen to "It Seems To Hang On," so I'd pick that one. I think we have "Don't Cost You Nothin" on 45. Radio wore the heck out of "Solid" but I can still listen to it...ocassionally
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

So so satisfied
I remember from Saturday Night Live when they performed it.
They always look so in love.

Can't do just one. disbelief

Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing
Ain't No Mountain High Enough

And for the groove and its testament to a love that's survived...

Solid

Solid, solid as a rock
That's what this love is
That's what we've got

Solid
Solid as a rock
And nothing's changed it
The thrill is still
Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot

You didn't turn away
When the sky went gray
Somehow we managed
We had to stay together

You didn't bat an eye
When I made you cry
We knew down the line
We could make it better

And for love's sake
Each mistake you forgave
And soon both of us
Learn to trust

Not run away
It was no time to play
We build it up
Build it up
Build it up

And now it's solid
Solid as a rock
That's what this love is
That's what we've got

Solid, solid as a rock
And nothing's changed it
The thrill is still
Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot

Gone with the wind
Another friend got in between
And tried to separate us
Knock knock on wood
You understood
Love was so new
We did what we had to

And with that feeling
We were willing to take a chance
So against all odds
We made a start
We got serious
This wouldn't turn to dust
We build it up
Build it up
Build it up

And now it's solid
Solid as a rock
That's what this love is
That's what we've got

Solid, solid as a rock
And nothing's changed it
The thrill is still
Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot
Solid

In addition to "It Seems To Hang On",these are my other favorite songs by them...

"The Debt Is Settled" (1978)
"Found A Cure" (1979)
"Love Don't Always Make It Right"(1980)
"Street Corner" (1982)
"High Rise" (1983)

Do you guys remember the 1980 Gladys Knight and the Pips hit "Landlord"? That song was written and produced by Ashford and Simpson and it's one of my favorites too.

There's a great livealbum from 1981 called Performance
where U can hear Ashford & Simpson do their versions of the songs
they did 4 other people.Songs like "Landlord" "The boss",
"Ain't nothing like the real thing" & "Ain't no mountain high enough".

DavidEye, we're on the same wavelength. "It Seems To Hang On" is my favorite Ashford & Simpson song as well. I clicked on this thread to wax poetic about the song, and you've already printed the lyrics and everything... biggrin

I've got to find my greatest hits CD now, I'm in the mood to listen to them.

yep, this is a G.R.E.A.T Live album, I really dig it nod

and I also must say, as much a I love Marvin & Tammi or others they did songs for... still no one sings an Ashford & Simpson song like Ashford & Simpson do!
