Jazz Fans: A LOVE SUPREME vs KIND OF BLUE

What do you think is the better album..John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" or "Kind Of Blue" by Miles Davis...I have heard both albums proclaimed as masterpeices and "Kind Of Blue" called the definitive jazz CD..but I prefer "A Love Supreme" by leaps and bounds!! Your comments..

for me it's an easy choice - i adore "a love supreme" and i've never really been able to get with miles' stuff like other people can. shrug

Come on Anx, "All Blues" "Freddie Freeloader" "So What" "Blue in Green" "Flamenco Sketches" if you can't find something to like about them tracks you need to have your ears cleaned. biggrin

I own neither but have heard them both thru other people. Kind Of Blue is the perfect "gateway" to jazz, but damned if I don't like A Love Supreme alot more.

I was supposed to play bass on a rendition of "A Love Supreme" in my college studies, so that is one reason I enjoy it more.

Simple: they're both masterpieces and impossible to choose between. I go for both.

Or sperm and mustard!

My own personal favourite would have to be "A Love Supreme", but "Kind Of Blue" I regard artistically maybe just a bit superior. A bit.

Kind of Blue. Coltrane did a better job on that one.

Dude, please, please, please listen to "Blue In Green". I would give my left one to be able to play piano as beautifully as Bill Evans does on this tune. Then, sit your tail down and listen to "Flamenco Sketches". It's brilliant how everyone takes a solo and when the bass gives a certain cue, they each go into a flameco vibe that's just beautiful. In my opinion, Miles, 'Trane, Cannonball and the rest of them all brought their A-game on 'Kind of Blue'.

To me Evans' most masterful playing is on "All Blues"...Miles described it as a waterfall, or something. When I listen to it I know exactly what he's saying.

I think A Love Supreme is a more passionate & artistic statement, but...

Kind of Blue has that rare combination of artistry & accessibility. It's probably the greatest jazz album ever.
