Ah the wonderful 80's. GnR, Van Halen, Aerosmith and Bon Jovi (who are more pop-rock than metal) were all cool, with Guns N' Roses being the best of the lot.

I had my share of hard times because, here you have this brother who's into Hair Metal and New Wave, and the other guys just weren't into it.

But funnily enough, I asked this one white kid about what kind of music he liked. I told him that I was into Motley Crue and Poison and stuff. But he said that he only liked Motley Crue, and everything else was either Hip-Hop or R&B. So what does that mean?

Another interesting thing I wanna point out is that I think some of the Black kids I knew dabbled into Hard Rock & Metal around the time Beavis & Butt-head came out. I guess that cartoon made Hard Rock appealing to the urban crowds because of the sucess of the whos. But I could be wrong.

Anyways, No matter what color you are, if you look back at Hair Metal now, it's just downright embarrassing. lol

Hey, u should have been there! Man, sometimes from the back, u couldn't tell the difference between the guys and the girls. The way some of these guys dressed with the heels and shit. Their hair would be plastered with AquaNet exactly like the girls and a lot of them wore make-up. But, the girls dug that shit. The more girlish u looked, the more girls u got. Although, I never wore heels and makeup, just me being a brother with the hair that played guitar in rock bands, I was in like flyn when it came to the girls. Similar to Slash. You could never see Saul's face, but he was also popular with girls, for the same reasons as mine. And trust me, everyone knew Saul was black. It was no secret.

i miss cheese metal (that's what i call it), so much! i wish it would make a come back. the bands that are out now just don't compare to the ones from the 80's. do you ever watch the classic vh1 channel when they show the metal videos? they are hilarious! i think all that aquanet went to their brains.

Yeah, it was a different time, no doubt about it. They have 80's tribute bands out here and at The Viper Room every Monday night, the place is packed. The bands play everything from hair metal days.

When I saw this thread he came to mind but I couldn't remember the name of the band. And I only remember it now because you said "sound". (Soundgarden!) razz He was/is a cutie.

dancerella said:

But then again, didn't RUN DMC incorporate a lot or Metal in their sound

Weren't Public Enemy and Anthrax into each others music? Didn't Anthrax cover "Bring the Noise?"

Oh, and there's a rap song out now that samples "Crazy Train". (The only reason I know this song is because it's Mike Piazza's at-bat song. smile )

Round and Round

Out on the streets, that's where we'll meet
You make the night, I always cross the line
Tightened our belts, abuse ourselves
Get in our way, we'll put you on your shelf
Another day, some other way
We're gonna go, but then we'll see you again
I've had enough, we've had enough
Cold in vain, she said

(Pre-chorus)

I knew right from the beginning
That you would end up winnin'
I knew right from the start
You'd put an arrow through my heart

(Chorus)

Round and round
With love we'll find a way just give it time
Round and round
What comes around goes around
I'll tell you why

Dig

Lookin' at you, lookin' at me
The way you move, you know it's easy to see
The neon light's on me tonight
I've got a way, we're gonna prove it tonight
Like Romeo to Juliet
Time and time, I'm gonna make you mine
I've had enough, we've had enough
It's all the same, she said

(Pre-chorus)

(Chorus)

Yeah!

Solo

Out on the streets, that's where we'll meet

As a matter of fact, I was alienated by being called a white boy at times. They got over it when I quickly answered with a huge "fuck u" and a quick lesson in the roots and depth of rap, hip hop, r&b, gospel, jazz, and funk. I just love music with no boundaries. They immediately got the picture.

Hair metal was also all about spandex and makeup which I don't think Metallica ever wore so that excludes them from this thread.

In college one of my roommates used to play Def Leppard's 'Hysteria' every single freakin' day and it drove me crazy. If I could have blown up his cassette I would. But after hearing it for the 200th time I strangely began to like it. So much so that a few years later I eventually bought Def Leppard's greatest hits. I also have the best of Guns 'N' Roses, but that's the extent of my hair metal collection. Outside of a few singles here and there (Ratt's "Round And Round", White Lion's "Wait", Lita Ford's "Kiss Me Deadly", etc.) I could never really get into it.
