[DVD Release] Wattstax

"All of us have something to say, but some are never heard. Over seven years ago, the people of Watts, stood together and demanded to be heard.

On a Sunday, this past August in the Los Angeles Coliseum, over 100,000 Black people came together to commemorate that moment in American history. Over six hours the audience, heard, felt, sang, danced and shouted the living word in a soulful expression of the Black experience.

This is a film of that experience and what some of the people have to say."

(dixit Richard Pryor)

Trailer Real Player - Quick Time

Wattstax more than a "Black Woodstock", the exceptionnal live concert of Stax Records, the Memphis Soul label, in L.A. Coliseum on Sunday August 20th 1972, celebrates the accomplishment of the black community 7 years after the 1965 riots in Watts, L.A.

After more than 30 years, the great movie "Wattstax"(in theaters in 1973) is released in a special edition 30th anniversary Cd & Dvd. Wattstax is just an excellent movie : a music documentary, and a chronicle of the African-American culture from 60s to 70s.

dig,i rememberseeing the trailer when i was 6 years old and wanting to see this film.finally now at 38 years old iv'e finally been blessed with the chance to own this dvd,if i was living in LA at thetime im sure i woulda been there.

the segment of the Emotions doing "Peace be still" in that church.. had tears goin down my eyes, seein that one sister gettin hit with the spirit and screamin' Albert king's doin "I'll play the blues for you" it dont get much better than that.

Pryor's segments were on point as always Rich can be. maaaaan if u dont own this dvd ya'll better get up on it, cus this movie is the TRUE experience.

can i get an amen?

Yeah, I was thinkin' about that, too. Since (I'm assuming) they shot the entire concert, why not give us all the footage of all the performances?

It's on my list of " Must Own " cause I was much too young to even remember this when it happend, or even accept the signifigance of its impact on folks. This will be nothing but a learning experience for a history dummy like me, I need to learn about such events like this. Plus it's a trip to see Jesse Jackson in his Afro & dashiki still floating on the fumes of MLK's death and chanting that tired ole rally call of " I AM SOMEBODY ". I wonder sometimes how I have survived with all of the money I've spent on entertainment,DVD's, concert tickets, T-shirts and so on. GOD loves me. eek lol

i'am assuming that cd has the full versions on it.....BUT you really should track down the 3 cd set i got it for $22 at Dustygroove.com.....BEWARE if you go to dusty you will spend alot of $$$$.because they have a Fantastic Funk, Soul selection.

the 3 cd set has loads of performances which are not included in the film,,,,,that's why i also feel they filmed alot more than they are showing.

Why can't they make music like this anymore?!
Why I say?! WHHHHHYYYY!!!!! fit

Anyway, the extended version of "Peace Be Still" is amazing...slightly different than the movie (I think this was an alternate take) also the remastering of the live tracks make you feel like you were righ there! thumbs up!

Probably because this music comes from the soul unaided by the microchip.

How was the Albert King set?

Just like it was on the movie. All of the live tracks were exactly the same although "Son of Shaft" sounded a bit edited (like you couldn't hear the lead singer baning his cowbell in the beginning). Overall, it's an awesome soundtrack. The Johnny Taylor track sounds like they're right in your livingroom! lol
