Prince should THANK Sinead and Chaka!!

come on..let's face it--99.9% of the free world never even heard of I feel for u or Nothing compares 2 u before these 2 ladies remade them. they were never released as singles (did the Prince album go platinum? I know The Family's album didn't for sure)...neither one is particularly spectacular as originally recorded, so it's not like Ginuwine doing When Doves Cry or Leann Rimes doing Purple Rain. There are probably dozens of other obscure re-recordings out there (some group called Lois L re-did Sex) that only the most die-hard orger would know about. Instead, Prince made big $$$ off of songs that for all intent and purposes never would have otherwise (and a Grammy to boot!). Whether or not you prefer the original or the remake really doesn't matter. If somebody makes a hit song out of Wasted Kisses, I'd love em just the same

And likewise they should thank him. Chaka for the boost in her career. Sinead O'Connor for a song that gave her recognition.

Stupid post again Chaka was with Rufus and was a great R& B singer to boot and futher more alot of artist have remade Prince's songs and many past artist like Marvin and Tammy Terrrel sang "If world was mine" first, then Luther Vandross remade it it sounds better to me but the point is this happens alot its flattering if anything if someone remakes u but do it RIGHT MAKE IT YOURS.

Actually, Sinead's freshman release had went gold, and she had a huge cult following at that time. She could've released "The Emporer's new clothes", or "3 babies" and would've gotten a top 10 hit.

Her career death was in ripping up a picture of the Pope, refusing to perform if the national anthem was played at her concert (we where in some wierd patriotic frenzy just after the first gulf war), and publicly dissing U2 (which was huge at the time).

Basically, the only thing she could have done more to make it difficult on her career was to change her name to prince, a name that has been known to place major speed bumps on poeple's careers.

But I don't think her #1 hit and Chaka's hit, or the bangles, for that matter, gave Prince much of a boost to his career. He probably got more money for writing that Ray Charles song in that Pepsi Commercial--I think it was called "U got the right one (Uh Huh)"

well, he got a grammy basically for a 5-year old obscure album cut that he had no input in producing...i'd call that a boost.

They should thank him for giving them the 2 biggest songs they ever had. They made a lot of money as well off those songs ...not to mention that those songs prolonged their career and got them a bigger fan base.

not sure about that. though the fact that NC2U did well at all was very surprising as she was mostly an indie artist...or at least not mainstream. It was a very sparse song and it was...well her...not really elements that make a pop song. I happened to think it was quite a break out hit. i think the video did a lot for it as well. Emperors new clothes was more her style and didn't do too much...Stretched on your Grave would have been a better choice. Anyway...all of your other observations about her are dead on.

Oh and she did do quite a bit after that. At least about...what 4 albums maybe five and a greatest hits too. Like I said, she's not a mainstream srtist, so her stuff wouldn't have gotten really out there. I think we know how it is when an artist doesn't get a lot of press or play in a decade.

I totally agree! Chaka was already a star in her own right and her remake of "I Feel For You" is one of only three remakes in my lifetime that I can actually say I like better than the original. Chaka's producer took it and gave it a whole new twist. That record definitely opened Chaka up to a much broader audience than she had before and it only made her better. The other two remakes I like better than the originals are Roger and Zapp's version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and Amii Stewart's version of "Knock On Wood". Both songs totally modernized versions of the originals.

As for Sinead's version, I like The Family's version better but without that record she would still be a nobody.

I'm sure Chaka appreciates what the song has done for her but Sinead she get on her hands and knees and kiss his ass for even putting her name on the map.

hmmm i don't recall uh-huhh being played on the radio a gazillion times, on mtv/vh1/BET a gazillion times and he still makes money everytime that song is played to this day. ask him where that 6,000,000 dollars is now and he couldn't tell you; ask him where that grammy is and he can point to it. that's like saying you would rather have 6,000,000 or an grammy...if you already have 20,000,000 in the bank (which he might have in 1984), u take the grammy award...besides how many people even knew he wrote uh-huh besides his most die hard fans? EVERYTIME an article mentions the commercial hits of CK and Sinead, his name is automatically in the article de facto.
and when exactly was the last time anybody saw an uh-huh commercial anyway?

Prince was huge at the time. Those two songs did little to help him out. It would be like Alicia Keys writing a song for an obscure artist, and this somehow giving her a boost to her career--not really. She would be lucky to make a good deal of money off of that. Prince made 6 million simply submitting a demo and allowing it to be used. Sinead and Chaka's successes had little or no impact on him or his career, any more than Alicia Key's rendition of "How come U dont' call..." helped to revive his career last year. Prince did it on his own. Residual artists that give nods to him have been abundant during his "Dark years" away from the limelight, but it was he who ultimately had to boost his career.

Props are just props, and the monetary reward for them isn't nearly what Prince is able to garner on his own, whether he gets credit for them in your next Q-magazine or not.

The uh-huh song is now the state anthem in Georgia, Romania and Siapan. Research this, and you will see. You will see.

Sinead put out some brilliant music since "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got". "Faith, Hope and Courage" was remarkable. No, there weren't many hits on her recent albums. But I think that for a good... say, 8 year stretch, you could say the same thing about Prince. "Hey, what'd that guy put out after Most Beautiful Girl in the World?"

But I agree on both sides. Sinead and Chaka certainly should have gratitude for Prince giving them their biggest hits, but Prince's certainly benefits now by being able to trot those songs out on tour and remind people how influential a writer he's been for other people - irregardless of the monetary aspect, it's a way for him to suck his own you know what. And, frankly, if there's one song I wish he'd drop from his set list, it's definitely "I Feel 4 U". The weakest part of the tour, if you ask me.

Gotta say I'd take Sinead's version over Prince's any day. Simple and achingly beautiful. But then, I think she has one of the most lovely voices ever recorded.

I'm not that keen on Prince's version either. The Family's LP version reigns supreme in my book worship
