Prince's First Studio Recording in Rock Legends Sale

By Sherna Noah, Showbusiness Correspondent, PA News

Pop star Prince’s first studio recording goes under the hammer later this month.

The cassette features the purple one at the age of 17, playing lead and rhythm guitar.

Five tracks were recorded on the tape at the Cookhouse Studios in Minneapolis in 1975.

The original 2-inch master copy was recorded with Pepe Willie and the band 94 East.

Pepe Willie became Prince’s mentor after his fiancee, Prince’s cousin, introduced the pair, before Prince had signed with Warner Bros.

The five songs on the recording, expected to fetch around £350,000, are entitled Games; I’ll Always Love You; Better Than You Think; If You See Me; and If We Don’t.

The sound the pair created through their collaborations would grow and become internationally recognised as the Minneapolis Sound.

The sale is part of the Rock Legends auction at Cooper Owen’s auction house on June 16, where items from Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, the Beatles, U2, Buddy Holly and Oasis are also going under the hammer.

Cooper Owen co-founder Ted Owen said: “This first recording reveals the talent that Prince possessed even at this young age.”

Those songs are available already on 94 East's cd. They are excellent.
Is this the sale of the master tape?
If so, why does it mention a cassette?

He won't. With the Musicology "comeback" this is a good time to cash in on Prince. Kind of like what WB is doing with the new DVD's. I'm not saying its right or that I agree, but Pepe is going to live the rest of his life off of the (six that I know of so far) re-releases of 94 East songs.

In the notes for 94 east, It says, " As it was, our engineer, Tommy Tucker Jr (thank you Tommy)
handled it with extreme care, cleaning the tape heads repeatedly as the tape was shredding."

Now would you want to buy shredded tapes, or is the story in the CD notes a lie?

At the expense of sounding like I'm opposing your point of view just for the hell of it...why not?

The LBC news bulletin I heard this morning was hilarious.

"Before he was purple!" boomed old Cormack Mc Mann on LBC " Recordings by a 17-year-old Prince are being auctioned by the man who taught him rock guitar!"

So Linster Willie is now the man who taught Prince rock guitar biggrin

Nice one, Linster... Keep milking your old and highly productive association with Prince for all it's worth lol
