The Dream Factory

I need help!

I'm trying to put together a huge-ass spread sheet of everything Prince wrote and recorded so that I can keep track of what I have and what I need to find. I'm hoping to include all four categories of works: released albums, unreleased albums (their original forms before some songs got included on other releases), albums released by other artists but primarily the work of Prince, and bootleg recordings (and I'll NEVER figure out all of these).

To make my list, I've been referring to charts in a few books about Prince and my own collection. These printed lists are helpful, but I can never find everything in exact chronological order in the same place at the same time.

One of the things I'm looking for, and I'm sure it's been posted here, is the original tracklisting of THE DREAM FACTORY before the project got disbanded and/or evolved into other projects. It seems to me that, in terms of all of Prince's vault stuff, THE DREAM FACTORY seems to be the album that was the closest to being a complete work without ever seeing the light of day.

So I guess what I'm looking for is:

1. What was the original track list for THE DREAM FACTORY?
2. Are there any other albums that Prince completed but never released? (Albums, not songs...I know about those...)

Thanks!

Thanks! There's some cool information there.

So am I to assume that there was never a set tracklist for the Dream Factory? This website doesn't list one...

Not sure about that one. Perhaps some of the "seasoned" orgers can help you there.

The info on that site is incomplete and out of date.

side one:
1. Visions (2:11) - Instrumental piano piece by Lisa
(Segue) 'Nevaeh Ni Ecalp A'
2. Dream Factory (2:37) - shorter than on CB
3. Train (4:17)
4. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (3:58 ) - same as on SOTT
5. It (5:05) - same as on SOTT

side two:
1. Strange Relationship (4:24) - different version (not Camille)
2. Starfish & Coffee (2:45) - almost identical to SOTT
(Segue) Guitar Interlude - played by Wendy
3. Slow Love (4:18 ) - same as on SOTT
4. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (6:48 ) - longer version

side three:
1. Sign O' The Times (3:39) - shorter version than on SOTT
2. A Place In Heaven (2:42) - Lisa lead vocal version
3. Crystal Ball (9:29) - diff to CB, includes Wendy & Lisa vocals

side four:
1. The Cross (4:41) - same as on SOTT
2. Last Heart (2:58 ) - same as on CB
3. Witness 4 The Prosecution (3:56) - version w/ horns and Wendy & Lisa background vocals
4. Movie Star (4:25) - almost the same as on CB
5. All My Dreams (7:09)

This is the supposed *last* configuration but I almost doubt that it's the 'final' as many like to think. Prince himself has said that Last Heart was never finished.

I thought "A Place In Heaven" followed "Movie Star"? Plus why are so many songs from SOTT on there? I thought most of those were conceinved and recorded post-The Revolution sessions. confuse

The track order on DF changed many times... which is why some songs don't follow in the way you might expect compared to old boots, etc..

...AND most of the SOTT stuff is Revolution era. Prince just ditched the stuff that had noticeable amounts of input from W&L... Strange Relationship was reworked quite a bit, for instance. As you'll note, Susannah is all over quite a bit of SOTT.

Indeed, although DF started out as a big joint effort it became progressively more of a solo effort towards the end.

If you do a quick search of this forum, you will find even more information.

The tracklist to the Flesh LP was discussed here just a week or so ago.

As always, the uptown books are a great source of info at your fingertips.

I didn't know about that huge Uptown book coming out in June until today. That's going to be incredible!

There was also another configuration of the 1988 Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic album
which had the following tracklist...

1. Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic
2. If I Had A Harem
3. Good Judy Girlfriend
4. Pink Cashmere
5. Electric Chair
6. Am I Without U?
7. God Is Alive
8. Still Would Stand All Time
9. Moonbeam Levels

oh, and the running order for the other version of Rave listed earlier isn't in the correct order,
it should be like this...

1. Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic
2. If I Had A Harem
3. The Voice Inside
4. Melody Cool
5. Stimulation
6. Elephants & Flowers
7. God Is Alive
8. Still Would Stand All Time

.
