the first verse just reminds me of how the devil would introduce himself. Remember when he appeared as a snake in the garden and talked to eve, he tried to make it seem as if he was her friend by the promise he made, although it was really a lie and he was full of deception, then made a promise which made it pleasing to the ears and eye. Just pay attention to the lyrics u'll see what I mean.

Correction....beautiful SPIRITUAL song, religion has nothing to do with it. When asked about that reunion with Melvoin, Prince grows wistful. "She plays acoustic guitar with me better than almost anyone. "The opportunity came up and her name was the first to come to mind. I'm looking for things to juice me too."

Correction....beautiful SPIRITUAL song, religion has nothing to do with it. True, Spiritual, not Religious. Why is it that most people have a hard time distinguishing between Religion and Spirituality.

Actually it IS a RELIGIOUS song, it's sung from the point of view of Jesus / God.

That does not make it a Religious song. But if you insist, what religion is he referring to in this song; Catholic, Baptist, Muslim, Morman... ? Because when I hear it, I don't hear him singing about any particular religion, just spirituality.

Because when I hear it, I don't hear him singing about any particular religion, just spirituality. Since the song is from a Jesus/God POV then that most certainly makes it religious, as it follows a Judeo-Christian mindset in particular. Just because he's not hitting you over the head with the word "Christian" in every other verse, that doesn't change it. It's not an open-ended spiritual song that could apply to all beliefs, it has a specific focus and belief system attached. The Blue Whale Pub - SF/F TV/Movie Discussion

It appears to be from a higher power POV, but you are assuming that it is Jesus/God. No where in the lyrics does it mention God/Jesus or anything Judeo-Christian. Unless of course you are referring to "I am a dove". Because I distinctly remember the Bible stating that God resembles a Dove. And that is why when Jesus was born, he came from an egg. That was the sign God gave to all the people that this was his son. Only God's son could be born of an egg because the Bible states that God resembles a dove. Don't get it twisted, you are just assuming that Prince is referring to Jesus/God because he is from the U.S.A. If Prince was from the Middle East, it would be just as easy to assume that he was referring to Allah.

The fact that Prince was actually raised and professed to be a Christian may also have something to do with that "assumption".. Oh, are you actually saying that Jesus hatched from an egg???

No, I'm not getting anything twisted. ...but you're jumping through some pretty big hoops to disassociate the song from it's meaning. Do you have a problem with it being a religious song? Prince is a self-professed Christian (it has nothing to do with him being from the USA), he sings about God/Jesus constantly, and this song is plainly sung from the POV of Jesus, the saviour - the messiah, who will forgive you of your sins and die for you. The imagery is all there. Just because he doesn't toss in a name for you means nothing... this certainly isn't a universal song that would fit all faiths...but, hey, if you feel the need to identify with it from another POV, I'm sure Prince won't mind. I'm not a Christian so I could care less. lol [This message was edited Sun May 16 19:45:35 2004 by jtfolden] The Blue Whale Pub - SF/F TV/Movie Discussion

Ah, well I didn't want to assume that you weren't serious. Well, again considering the religious histpory of the author I don't think it's much of a leap. It's actually a pretty well accepted interpretation of the lyrics. [This message was edited Sun May 16 19:47:15 2004 by Universaluv]

Groan! Here we go again. Just LISTEN and WATCH him sing it live. You can see it on the HITS DVD WB put out a few years ago. He does the same thing with Purple Rain when he sings it live. Quit making us(Christians) look bad.

I believe that was in reference to the Holy Spirit, specifically.

When he does this song on the Musicology tour, Prince changes the lyrics to: "He's your Messiah, and you're the reason why," and points skyward. Filthy cute and baby U know it

P probably considers the way he originally wrote the lyrics (most defintely with Jesus as the speaker) as a somewhat arrogant approach. Not true from where I sit, but hey. It's also very apt to be misunderstood -- "O, he thinks he's the Messiah!"
